I sounds like a BB gun up to 400 fps with a 26" barrel and sounds like a BB gun up to 800 fps with a 60" barrel.

The slower load is good for side shots on the rib cage, but to go through the front shoulder, I need the fast one.

Blue Dot has been known to produce erratic and high pressures in cold weather, rather the opposite of most powders who's pressure increase with higher temps and lower with colder. If you live in a cold climate I wouldn't use ammo loaded with Blue dot in below freezing weather. Not an issue for me living in the AZ desert.

I've seen Blue Dot described as the "psycho girlfriend of gunpowders." :D

My LGS owner/reloading mentor swears by it in .357 Magnum.

I have nearly 100 rounds of 357 with 125 gr Hornady XTP over 13.0 gr of Blue Dot. I fired 5 out of my 686 with a 8 3/8 barrel and they seemed like tame loads. I don't have a chrono and the casings slid right out of the cylinder. No signs of overpressure that I'm aware of.
Am I safe to fire the remaining 93 rounds I have?

14 grains of Blue Dot, a 125 grain XTP, and a Winchester magnum primer made for very sticky extraction in my 6" 586.

Lots of folks like Blue Dot. I'm thinking they can have my share.

armarsh, i bet if you switch to a cci500 primer, your cases won't stick any more.

14.0gr caused sticky extraction as well. I pulled mine. Wouldn't fire any more at 14.0 out of my GP100. 14gr ran 1526 fps out of my 6" GP100. Backed off to 13.0 and got 1443fps, no more sticky extraction. Now I just just use 2400 or 296. No way I would load up any mor over 13.0 gr.

Good luck, and be careful should you choose to continue using blue dot.

I know my cases won't stick anymore. I'm running a stout load of 2400 instead of Blue Dot. :)

The research I did after getting the sticky extraction lead me to the conclusion there is little good reason to use Blue Dot. After all, it is the psycho girlfriend of gunpowders.

2400 is another powder that does not require a magnum primer.

i was trying to make a point in my last post. primers can make a big difference regarding pressure and velocity.

bluedot and magnum primers don't mix. imop
