.357 mag and overpenetration

I load, shoot and carry full house magnums from my snubs almost exclusively. I have tested all the Gold Dots, XTP's, Nosler JHP's, and a few other JHP's. In every tightly rolled up wet denim test submersed in water, the bullets always fully expand, and they defeat a full 16" and embed into soft dirt.

There are full tilt H110/296 loads fired from 2-1/2" snubs. Velocities have been determined to be as high as high 1300's . low 1400's with 110 gr. XTP's, to a low end of 1100's with 158 gr. Gold Dots, XTP's, and Nosler JHP's. I noticed that the Noslers did shed the jacket usually, but they still completely defeated the denim. Of all the bullets I tested, the Gold Dots were the most impressive and did what they are designed to do. I've also seen what they do to a mule deer, a complete through and through head shot. I've also seen them go through and through lung shot on a mule deer, so ya, they do penetrate quite well.

So I certainly think about this aspect as having the potential, and the likely hood of presenting a collateral damage risk. But I also have serious doubts about the projectile having enough energy left to present a deadly risk to innocent by standers, especially if I do my part by not shooting wildly, aiming for body mass is the key here I think.
