I am trying to estimate the velocity of the 125 gr .357 Gold Dot out of my Smith model 60 with a 2 1/8 inch bbl.

I found a thread online where the Remington 125 gr .357 clocked at 1317 fps out of a 640. Like the Gold Dot, it is listed at 1450 fps out of a 4 inch bbl.

Since both loads are 125 grains, and both go 1450 fps out of 4 inch bbls, would not the Gold Dot run around 1300 fps out of my 60 (same bbl as the 640)?

Estimates of bullet velocity outta any given gun is just a guesstimate. Two exact same guns may have different velocities with the same ammo. Your guess may be close, but the only way to know is to chrono them.

There can be 50fps or more difference between two individual, but identical guns with the same barrel length. 1300 fps is optimistic for many 4" guns. Remington's website shows 1220 fps from a 4" barrel so around 1000 fps would be my guess from a 2" gun. That is in line with the results BBTI got.

But unless you chronograph it you'll never know.

BBTI includes the overall length of the cartridge into their data, so with a 357 (1.590) their 2in data is more like 1/2 of an inch.

If you want a more accurate figure look at the 4in data.

Unfortunatly in their "real world" data they only go as short as a 4in barrell, their 3in example is a derringer, again a barrell with the overall length included.

I get 1250 fps from a 2-1/4" Ruger SP101 but as other have stated every revolver is different.

Does it matter anyway?

If you think you can't hardly stand the blast, flash & recoil out of a 20 oz snubby .357?

The guy on the other end will like it even less!

+ / - 100-200 FPS MV will neither make it or break it as far as good shots go!

This might help. Here are some velocities obtained with my two Ruger KLCRs which have 1.875" barrels.

How about overpenetration

I have read a lot of posts by guys using SP101's with 2 1/4 inch bbls using the Speer 125 gr .357 gold dot. Great info for velocities. How about overpenetration. Anyone concerned using this round out of a snub?

Whatever your getting is more than fast enough if you put it where it needs to go. Contemplate your front sight intensely and don't worry about velocities. They're marketing pixie dust. They're not really that important. Dry firing until you don't move the front sight is a good objective.

I beg to differ.

Modern JHPs are designed with a velocity range in mind in order to optimize penetration and expansion. I recommend the OP find a chronograph to measure velocities gained in HIS gun to see what he gets, then try to compare that data to other ballistics tests he can research.
