Does anyone know what type of powder may be in American Eagle 158gr. JHP bullets? Reason i am asking is i use 10grs of Bullseye to fireform 35Whelen brass. I just ran out of Bullseye and i have Five unopened boxes of 357 Mags that i no longer own. Was wondering if i could pull the bullets, use the powder to fireform and use the bullets in the 35Whelen for the grand kids fun shooting. They don't care if the get good tight groups @ 50 yards.

It won't be nearly as fast as Bullseye, no matter which powder it is. They do not use canister powders for 99% of factory ammo anyway.

The powder in 250 .357 cartridges amounts to maybe a third to half a pound of powder. $8 to $10 worth. The unopened boxers of ammo are worth much more than that($80-$100). I say sell 'em.

probably something in the burn rate of 2400.

I say sell or trade the ammo also !!

If ya have any more shotgun powders they`re fairly fast burners .

AK_Maine_iac,
Bring those unopened boxes of .357 Magnum ammo to your local gun shop and trade them for jugs of Bullseye. Each box is probably worth as much as a pound of powder. At best you will yield ~750gr of powder from 50 rounds of ammo, not very much for the price of that ammo...

The powder probably isn't fast enough for that.

Surely you know somebody who could use the .357 ammo. I'd work out a sale or trade.

Or get a .357 mag revolver so those cartridges won't feel so useless... :)

I think it is no longer legal to exchange ammunition, powder, and primers. I'm no authority on it but I do recall having heard that a time or two.
Please understand, I'm not intending to offend you in any manner what so ever, after all the following is only my personal opinion, and is worth no more than that. So far as using the powder for another application, it could be a bad experience. The powders used for almost all factory ammunition is not canister powder, so knowing it's relative burn rate, thus appropiate charge weight, would be a throw of the dice. Whether or not it will perform well would be the least of my concerns, but more so, how will it react, especially since you mentioned your Grand Children being the ones shooting these loads that were developed without an established base line. It would be no different than ripping the lable off of 25 or so different rifle powders so they are unidentifiable, and then aimlessly picking one, and then picking a charge weight out of thin air. Another concern I would have is not knowing if the manufacturer used the same powder for all of those boxes of ammunition. I would imagine manufacturer's will change powders in mid production becuae they may have run out of the first one, and decided to use another one to complete a run for that lable that performs with simular ballistics even though it may have a completely different charge weight and burn rate.
I would sell the rounds and use the money to get what you need for your desired application. For that matter, I would be interested in buying those rounds off you if your interested in unloading them. I don't like factory ammunition, but I'll shoot it for the brass. PM me if you want to sell them so we can discuss shipping costs, and what you want to get out of them.

+1 on the no longer legal. Can't here in Alaska. I can't even sell it. But i can give it away to someone and they can give me some powder as a donation. In which i did do this afternoon. HE GAVE ME 1LB OF BULLSEYE AND 1 LB OF imr 4064 along with a zip lock bag of 50+ speer 308 168 gr bullets that he had no use for. So i am a happy camper now.

I wanted to get a 357mag. The wife was not to happy about that because i just bought a Ruger 45colt last week. Now i guess she wants me to get her something. She is hinting about a 380 pistol for HD use.

For the sake of safety please do not load any powder into anything unless you know exactly what the powder is. You could damage your gun , your hands and your face very easily. Next time your at the range find a guy with t 357 and just hand him the rounds.

Cost of ammo!!! VS cost of gas!!!
Ammo = $25.00 up to $80.00 per box
Gas = 5.00 per gal. Oh well screwed either way if you live in Alaska:banghead:

Think i am a true sourdough now. Sour on Alaska and not enough dough to move out.

I think the guy who you GAVE the ammo to got the better end of it BUT, if you also got what you needed it's all good in the end... (I would have pushed for one additional lb. of powder personally)
