.357 magnum or .44 special?

For HD I'd use (and I do) a .44 Spec. For carry - I'm kind of stuck with a H&K P2k .40. It's my duty gun, but I like it.;)

Even the shorter version of the SP101 is a good choice in .357mag...It is heavier than comparable smiths but you won't have to worry about unseating bullets or wearing the gun out because of shooting too many full-power loads.

I have a little 5 shot S&W revolver. It very nearly hurts to shoot the dang thing. I definitely practice with 38. IMO, if you want it, I would go for the light weight .38 since it is easier to carry and .38 makes a decent self defense round anyway.

The only 357 revolver I want now is an 8 shot revolver I saw in Shotgun News. :)

I saw a 44 special revolver advertised. That did look like something I might get down the road.

I'll second the SP 101. If you want a small gun in .357 -- one that you can actually practice with -- get an SP 101.

I agree with that. Yopu will have a much wider variety of factory ammo selections in 38/357 than 44 special.

needs/uses...

If the snub is ONLY for CQB type CC or SD, I'd buy a new .44spl, :D. The big hole would scare me! :uhoh:

If you want to target shoot or you think the snub revolver will be used one handed in a CQB incident, go with a .357mag and have the .357/.38spl flex plan...
;)

PS: I'd use the .44spl Glaser Safety-silver slug, Speer Gold Dot 200gr JHP or maybe the Magsafe .44spl for CQB-CC carry...

The SP101 is hard to beat, but the muzzle blast of a short barrel 357 is significant.

Don't know if you can find one but a 2-1/2" bbl Charter Arms Bulldog in 44 Special has a lot going for it. I found some hollow cavity, SWCs that are something.

And the votes are in

The .44 Special it is. :) I feel a little more comfortable carrying something that will make a bigger hole. The .357 is a great round, make no mistake, but recoil and blast are a consideration. With the .44, I can load to a much lower velocity and let the bullet weight do the work, without the problem of overpenetration. I talked to my dealer this weekend and got a price on a Charter Arms Bulldog (Less than my local Davidson's price). I'll order it as soon as my GP 100 and P 345 are in the safe. Thanks to all who replied.

My two favorite revolvers are the S&W 627, an 8 shot .357 magnum with 5" barrel, and a S&W 329PD, a lite weight .44 magnum, with 4" barrel, 6 shooter.

The .357 simply because it shoots 8 .357 magnums very easily and smoothly. I have no problem with any .357 magnum loading I've tried out of this revolver.

The .44 magnum because it is light weight. While it is not a handgun I'll take a box of full house .44 magnums to the range to shoot, I have no problem with the Speer Short barrel loads, Blazer loads and .44 Special loads, or for that matter putting together low end reloads.

Choosing between the two simply comes down to the mood I'm in ... both are great revolvers in my mind.

I'm a fan of the .357 magnum loaded with 125 Grain JHP's or SJHP's myself, but many people find it a "hard" load to shoot well.

If you are considering four legged predators, as well as two-legged, then I would look at the 44 Mag, but for bi-pedal aggressors, and if you can control the round, the .357 magnum is it.

I carry a 3" GP100 and will use a 2 1/4" SP101 as a BUG as soon as I get it back from being "'smithed". The 3rd Gun is a J-Frame "snubbie". I'm a fan/advocate of multi-gun carry, no matter what you're carrying.

The .357 can be had in smaller guns easier than the .44 if that makes any difference. I have and sometimes do carry an N-Frame Revolver, but prefer the l-Frame size as it's a little easier to pack IMHO. The easiest is the J-Frame size, but it comes with increased recoil.

It's a toss up. I like the .44 Spl. & love my 3" 696 (I still have my Charter Arms Bulldog also.), but have no problem with my 2 1/2" 686 being a gun I'd stake my like on either.

I have had a Taurus 4" 44 Spl. for 20 years, and I have a Taurus 3" 357 on order. I usually carry two speedloaders. The ability to get Safariland speedloaders is a factor in getting a 357 in my case.

Indoors at night, I'd prefer the .44 Special. Ballistic performance isn't everything. I don't own a .44. I have a 2" M85 Taurus UL in my bedroom and I carry it from time to time, too. .38 is enough. I own several .357s, but they don't get carried often and they're just too much on the senses indoors with magnum loads.
