.357 or .44

Mighty morphing power rangers at that. Man I miss being 5. Also, it bugs me when people post without reading the thread, a 9mm? Really? We’re talking 300gn wfn round here!
if you load a 9mm with 160gr and some how make it go 1800 fps. it should work

You haven't been practicing enough if you can only get one shot off.
well I never has a bear or moose charge me. But, I do shoot USPSA, but not in 2020, the lockdowns here in WA was intimidating

Since you have trained in USPSA I would carry with what you trained with.
That what I carry now! very good with it. yes IWB

But I need a gun that says, Fly Fisherman from a LL Bean Catalog. Something small and powerful, and when I nod at other anglers. they know I’m here to fish and not run. DREAMS !!

That Puma is so light, too light
I wanted about an extra 1" on the stock so I found a leather, lace on butt pad and put a 1/2" piece of foam in it (keeping with the levergun "character"). Yep a straight stock gun shooting hefty 44 Magnum loads does let you know it's there but recoil never bothered me...

If you want something lighter weight you could look at 41 mag or 44SPC as those are often on a smaller frame than a .44 (more like a 357 frame).
Or in the case of the blued Blackhawk, they have aluminum bits that cut several ounces off their weight. A blued .45Colt Blackhawk weighs the same as a 4¾" Colt SAA with a lot more capability.

I been eyeballing that Model 69, I would if that short barrel has enough to burn all that .44 mag powder
my 4.625" blackhawk in 45lc pushes a 325 grain bullet out the muzzle @ 1275 fps. and that is just "ruger only" loads @ about 32,000 psi. i wouldn't worry about the short (4.25") barrel degrading performance. also, the gun weighs 37 ounces (about the same as a k-frame smith).

fyi, i get 1,200 fps muzzle velocity out of my 180 grain load for the 357 magnum (also a 4.625" blackhawk), a bit sharp on the report, though.

luck,

murf

my 1st and only revolver is a S&W .460 V. I’m really only good for 1 accurate shot then I flinch so bad I’m better off throwing that gun at a bear. I love the idea of a 340gr hard cast in a 2.5” barrel!

what’s the heaviest .357 bullet they make?

This isn't what you asked about but have you ever considered a T/C Contender? If you're only going to get off one shot - and, in a charging animal type scenario, that's a real possibility - then it might as well be a rifle shot. The T/C with a 14" .45-70 barrel carries like a light-framed .44 revolver, is more compact, and handles very well. There's no arguing a .45-70 tuned for short-barreled carbines is effective against almost anything on four legs. I have a T/C and eight barrels, mostly 10" but a 14" in .35Rem that makes a good rig for hiking and a 16" .223Rem barrel with butt stock for fun plinking. As powerful as the .44Marnum is, I'm thinking any load you put together for brown bear is going to be so abusive in a 3" or 4" barrel you'll be right back to one good shot and lots of misses.

Not hating on the TC but I need to look good too. Half the fun of going in the woods is dressing up. Like when I’m trap shooting, I wear a vest, button up shirt, pants, nice boots!

I’m going to start with a .44 4” loaded with 280-ish gain, going fast! I’ve shot a full
house load out of a Turas and it’s not bad at all.

that’s a dilemma... Good looking single action or functional double

that’s a dilemma... Good looking single action or functional double

Once you arrive at a certain recoil threshold (which is different for everyone) a DA revolver isn't any faster to shoot two-handed than a SA revolver. And is only going to be acceptable accurate shot one-handed at contact distance (if you have a bear on top of you). There's certainly the speed of reloading to consider, but how much that matters depends entirely on what you're up against.

When a SA revolver is cocked with the support hand thumb, multiple shots can be made pretty fast. There's a video of @MaxP and some other guys shooting a Freedom Arms .454 very fast in a timed drill. I doubt it could be done with a DA using the same load any faster or more accurately. In fact, trying to shoot like that with a double action might turn out slower and less accurate. For some reason, cocking with the support hand thumb serves in part to reindex the gun.

Aw, c'mon, man! One-handed stance with a 14" barrel? You can't get any more Captain's Courageous than that! As a certain public figure likes to say, if that's not what the pony soldier said it's cooler than a bucket of peanuts and coleslaw in the afternoon. And you know it!

was that a quote from colonel sanders?
