Just purchased a well-used 4" Security Six....it shoots well and accurately, but has an odd trigger abberation I have never encountered....when shooting single action, I squeeze the trigger, and the hammer clicks forward a little, then with more pressure, it fires....what is causing the first little forward motion? As I mentioned, new to me? Recommendations.....

They are easy to disassemble and reassemble and the trigger group comes out the bottom so first I would clean the interior and look for anything that seems broken or overly worn. Their SA trigger is usually very nice and what you describe is abnormal for a ruger.

"Well used". Sounds like Bubba might have been in there with a horseshoe rasp doing a trigger job. Go ahead and pull it down and you will probably find that it has been fooled with.

The good news is that Ruger does overhauls on these very reasonably, and that the guns are well worth the effort. I have sent in a few over the years.

Stone the Sear

The sear engagement sounds like it could be stoned down a bit, albeit carefully. What's happening is that as you squeeze the trigger, the trigger begins to back out of its engagement with the hammer. When it goes far enough the spring pushes the hammer forward and *BANG!*

In this case the notch sounds a bit excessive. As you squeeze, it begins to come out but it doesn't quite go far enough. Squeeze a little more and it disengages.

Taking the gun apart, notice how the trigger and hammer interact. When you see the sear (the catch in a gunlock that keeps the hammer cocked), you'll know which part to stone. The trick is to find the drop-off point and shoot for that. Don't remove too much metal at a time or you'll have a situation where it slips off prematurely.

If you take your gun and a good knife sharpening stone to the range, chances are you can find someone who can show you what to do. Or a gunsmith could fix it in just a few minutes.

Send it to Ruger and ask them to do a checkup. It costs very little to nothing.

Check the Ruger website for info on how to send in your gun.

Thanks for the insights and good advice

I dropped the Security Six with a gunsmith this afternoon ---his immediate assessment was that someone has been messing with the innards -- should know soon. Thanks again.

Just to clear it up

the gunsmith wanted to see if he could make a small adjustment in shop, if it looks like more than that, it's headed to Ruger...Thanks again.
