a friend built a light weight .358 about 25 years ago on a short 98 mauser action and it realy shot well, well above its pay grade. I think he shot 200 gr 35 Remington bullets at 2400 fps and as I remember killed a pile of deer with it. eastbank.

I just got back from the range . I did pretty good I pick up some RL-7 & I also loaded 10 w/ IMR 4064 total of 35 rounds today . I got 1.5" groups @100yards , sighted 2.5" high & thats good for me in New England . I bought the rifle for X-mas ,I had sights put on it I was getting 1.5" @ 50 yrd . today I took the scope off of my .308 rings & all & mounted straight on to the .358 made just 3 adjustment up & BINGO I am a happy man for now

Research the archive at Handloader.com. John Barsness did an article on the .338Federal and .358win, working up loads and comparing them.
He found that TAC gave him the best velocities.

Ken Waters did an article on the .358 back around 2003. His "Pet" load was the 200gr Hornady over H4895. My .358 BLR-81 also prefers it.

I've used IMR3031 as well as the Speer 180gr. I can only say it was unremarkable. I don't remember having trouble getting the powder in the cases, but velocities and accuracy were disappointing.
I didn't see decent accuracy till I started seating the bullets as long as the magazine allows, as my rifle has a long throat.
My favorite load is 48.0gr of H4895 under the Hornady 200gr PtSpt at 2.830" iirc. Gets about 2,540fps from 20"bbl. Any more powder and extraction gets "stiff".
Only if I was hunting where grizzlies could be a problem would I want more bullet. In that case, it would be either be the 225gr Nosler or 250gr Hornady.
