Is there a schematic that can be posted so when we refer to parts of revolvers (or rifle locks) we all can use or at least have access to similar terminology?

What I call a cylinder arbor, you might call a cylinder pin, and someone else might call a "cylinder thingy".

It might help lessen confusion, especially as often we get threads about ...How do I fix...

Just a thought.

Well, almost.

That diagram calls the 'cylinder thingy' a 'frame'. Or more accurately doesn't name it at all.

This is a great starting point, however. If I can get some time during one of the late night Stanley cup games I'll take a shot at photoshopping it to add some more info. If nothing else it'll give us something else to flame - I'm sure there will be plenty of dissension about some of the names I use, at least from one person.

cylinder pin

If you want to see one of them listed as such a Remington would be the one to show.

I wasn't intending a "one photo fits all" scenario.

If the situation calls for a Remington to be pictured, include it.

I was hoping for a sticky of a parts legend and sketch so all could see what was being talked about.

Getting folks to use it might be a different story.

he may call it a base pin but its part of the frame. Colts original design was based on 30 pieces not 31.

I always knew the arbor/cylinder pin to be part of the frame.
It'd be interesting to list all the different names for the same part; pawls, sears, lugs, studs, arbors, keys, etc.
I think the Paterson has 17 more parts than (for example) the Walker.

Ya but you cant count the chewing gum to keep it together POHILL.

Ok bad joke. Id love to have a paterson.

Yeah, but have you ever tried to put a Paterson back together? I have one and those 17 extra parts seem like 170. Gum isn't a bad idea, or an extra hand (human hand).
I got the "17 extra parts" info from a book but I can't remember which one.

Nope, never tried to fix a Paterson. Researched 'em, though, when I thought about taking apart a Peterson relic I'd dug up. One look at the plans disabused me of that idea. I donated it to the local historical society instead.

Good question. Post your schematics here and I'll add this to the sticky thread on essential knowledge.

This is a Test Name that Rev and Name the parts ... honor system write the answers at home and grade yourself...Post your persentile on both Revs.

First one is a Colt Paterson & the second one is a Ruger Old Army made prior to 1977.

Paterson:
1 = Frame
2 = hammer
3 = barrel
4 = wedge
5= cylinder
7 = hand
8 = back strap
10= trigger
11 = grip
I'll have to get to the rest, gotta get back to work.
