I am handloading .38 S&W for use in a S&W Terrier ca. 1957 in good condition. Is it ok to use a Hornady 158g LSWC .358 dia. bullet?

I have seen load data on the web using .358 and .361 bullets.

Yes, it is O.K..

But you might get better accuracy and less leading with a 148 grain HBWC (Hollow-Base Wad-Cutter) that would expand or bump up to fit the bore.

I have purchased LRN bullets from Graff and son in the past that were cast and sized for the round mentioned. They were LOTS more accurate than using the 38 SPL dies and .358 Lead SWC bullets in my revolver. Well worth getting the correct dies and bullets if you want more than minute of barn accuracy. I did start off using cut down 38 SPL brass and bullets however but caution you that it is not the best route.

I tried cast .358 bullets in .38 S&W in the past and leaded my bore horribly within a few shots. The .38 S&W just doesn't get enough pressure to bump them up and seal the throats/bore.

I think the Hornady you are asking about is soft swaged, and may work, but the HBWC will bump up even more easily. If the 158 leads, give the 148 HBWC a try.

I used Super Grex as a filler with the cast lead and it stopped all leading. So did wax gas checks, but Super Grex is discontinued (PSB might work), and wax gas checks are a pain in large quantities. Work great though.

I just gave up and shot cheap Remington 125 JHPs back then, but today I like to shoot the 158 Gr X-Treme SWC.

If you want to shoot lead, your best bet is the 148 Gr HBWC or a properly sized cast or swaged bullet.

I have found a .361 lrn at MO. Bullets. Dies on the way. I have once fired 38 s&w brass on hand.

Thanks for the advice. Better to use the proper components than make a mess trying to use on hand materials.

So far as I know, most if not all .38 S&W chambered revolvers should be loaded with .361" dia. bullets.

The one exception are Colt Police Positive revolvers chambered in .38 Colt New Police - that is the same and interchangeable with .38 S&W.

They have chamber throats and bore groove dimensions that are identical to .38 Special. Therefore use .358" bullets in these Colt's.
