It is a Smith & Wesson Model 10 Military & Police with the old standard "pencil" tapered barrel and . Somebody will probably look up the year of manufacture for you and guess a dollar value. But you aren't going to sell Dad's gun, are you?

My Dad sold his Colt, his only gun, after he retired. It wasn't nearly as nice as yours, but I wish I had it to remember him by. I do have Mom's, though.

S&W revolvers do not have safetys because they don't need safetys.

The long revolver DA trigger pull is far safer then the Glock trigger blade safety with a light short pull.

That's good to know, I think what is more important to me is to be able to safely carry it in a concealed manner (like in the small-of-the-back). A compact semi would be much more accommodating to that I think. I'm leaning toward an updated version of the M&P I have.

The revolver you have is far safer to carry then either the pistol you have, or the one you propose to get. That's because when the hammer is forward at rest it's positively blocked by not one but two mechanical (not manual) safeties that work with no operator intervention. To disconect them to fire you first must either cock the hammer, or pull the trigger. Both require a force in the 10 to 12 pound range. Also you can load and unload a revolver without compromising either safety or touching the trigger.

You may well decide for other reasons that you prefer the pistols, but if safe carry is your prime consideration you're making the wrong pick.

We need an intervention here. Let me try:

Tribat - this is Dad's gun. Don't even dream of getting rid of it. It's also a very good gun. Keep it loaded and keep it handy. It will never fail you. It's one of the finest handguns ever made - a vintage pre-lock S&W in near-mint condition.

This is like a blue-chip stock. It will only appreciate in value. And it's a classic. It is 100% reliable, insanely accurate, you can stake your life on it, and it is a firearm with soul. If you must do the Glock thing, then do that, but don't let this precious heirloom ever leave you.

Roger that, thanks for the advice. I definitely hold on to it then. Do you have any idea of the production year based off of the s/n?

the desirability of that revolver far outweighs the price you could get for it at the present time. M&Ps are not rare but that one appears to be from a favorable period. There are a number of holster options that will allow you to conceal it comfortably - at least as comfortably as a compact semi-auto.

Does pre lock mean a lock with a key like the Taurus revolvers? I have a smith 36-1 i purchased a round 1976?

S&W began installing a lock (with a key) in 2002. It is very controversial (to put it mildly) so the less said the better.
