FYI Only:

Read a nice public article today in the Guns and Ammo magazine (on page 14) where Payton Miller performed some testing of Speer's new 135-gr. Gold Dot HP.

A summary of the "Chronograph Results" is as follows:

* 2" barrel testing compiled a 5-shot average of 878 fps with a high of 900 and low of 855, resulting in a max spread of 45 fps and a Standard Deviation of 16. Revolver used was a S&W Model 49 Bodyguard.

* 4" barrel testing compiled a 5-shot average of 976 fps with a high of 990 and low of 955, resulting in a max spread of 35 fps and a Standard Deviation of only 13. Speer advertizes "975 fps" from a 4" vented barrel. Revolver used was a S&W Model 15 and for accuracy, produced 5-shot averages of 1 1/2" at 25 yards.

* 6" barrel testing compiled a 5-shot average of 1,004 fps with a high of 1,028 and low of 977, resulting in a max spread of 101 fps and a Standard Deviation of 43. Recoil of the 135-gr. Gold Dot was likened to that of a 125-gr. +P 38 Special load and less than the slow & heavy 158-gr.

For comparison, the more massive 158-gr. Winchesters were chronographed for a 5-shot average of 760 fps (2" barrel), 850 fps (4" barrel), and 894 fps (6" barrel).

Black Hills' lighter grain 125's averaged 810, 911, and 926 fps respectively (2", 4" and 6" pipes).

The article sums things up by stating that "Speer's new 135-grain GDHP load is potent, controllable and accurate."

I've been trying to find these near me with no luck...the closest I came is 125gr gold dots......I really want these suckers too....

Since this round is somewhat new, you might have to educate your local supplier or special order it.

Most (but not all) Internet suppliers are now shipping the 135-gr. Gold Dot.

Steve, if you're in the northern half of the state and want to hook up for lunch, shooting or whatever, shoot me a PM, there are a decent size group of us that get together at least monthly someway or other.

BTW: Thanks for the info, my father will be VERY interested in those for his security six.
