.38 Super Doe...

Hello. Managed to shoot a small doe today with my STI Trojan 5" in .38 Super.
The round used was a handload pushing a Remington 147-gr Golden Saber 9mm hollow point bullet to an average velocity of 1188 ft/sec.

It was raining and distance was about 15 yards.

At the shot, she jumped and ran about 15 yards before collapsing. You can see the entry wound on her left front shoulder. It exited just behind the right shoulder.

The doe is no "trophy" nor even a very large one. This deer was taken on property overrun with doe and the state has issued extra permits to the landowner to thin the herd a bit so this one was taken. Should be quite tasty as she's certainly not going to be old and tough.

PS: Did see one buck, not a shooter yet, that I'd estimate at 2 1/2 yrs. He had 7 points, an extremely high rack and should be a shooter in a couple or three years. I admit looking over the Trojan's sights at him, but didn't touch the trigger.

She's bigger than the one I got in an early antlerless season back in September.
Mine was stalked to within 30 yards and shot with my Ruger M77RL in .250 Savage.
Afterward, I thought: "You know, I could have shot that one with my Smith .41 Magnum!"

I have five tags for Southern NYS this year. One will be filled on a deer this size at the end of the season, as long as I can tell that its a doe. You will never, ever get any better red meat than from a yearling. The steaks will be awsome !

Steve, you post some of the best "after action reports".

So, did the bullet hit any bone? how did it perform, as best as you could tell? That 147gr at 1187fps is a step up from those 9X19s you used to take those other deer with. Still, it's an impressive feat to make such a beautiful handgun shot that can so quickly and humanely put one down as that.

Hello, and thank you Matt G. As far as I could tell on the rib cage, no bone was hit. Neither was the heart, but the large vessles on top of it were as were both lungs. It was drizzling and sprinkling for all the time I was sitting out in it, but waited for the bottom to fall out when I began dressing the animal.
