I bought the wife a new gun last week so we went out shooting. We were using 115gr WWB ammo. Out of 150 rounds we had 7 failures to extract. Could it be from a bad magazine or is it a extractor problem? I included some pics of the jams.

I also included some pics of the brass and the marks on the fired brass. Pretty good marks on the brass and the other pic is where the rim is actually bent down on the fired cases. The bent part is the same part that is chewed up on the top of the case. Any idea what is causing this mark? Is it related to the extractor?

Finally I linked a YouTube video showing a live round in the slide. If I read correctly, the extractor should hold the round? My Ruger 9mm officer holds the rounds fine, but with this Emp the rounds just fall out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have a machining mark on the breach face that is causing the mark on the base of the brass. That can be removed with a file, has nothing to do with the FTE. The FTE, I would be looking at the extractor. It's loosing control of the brass. Need to check tension and fit. If it's a new gun let the mfg take care of the warranty work.

I agree with@Blue68of100 and would add that the magazine has nothing to do with the failure-to-extract.

It could be the extractor, it could be a tight chamber, it could be a short barrel leade, or a couple of other possibilities. Send it back to the mother ship with a full description of the symptoms and whatever pictures you think might be helpful.

I assume the pics are showing a fired case partially extracted from the chamber and a live round jammed up under it. What's most likely happening is the extractor is losing control of the fired case which allows the case to float forward and reinsert itself into the chamber to one degree or another. Then the slide comes forward and attempts to strip the next round out of the magazine but it can't.

If you're comfortable with the idea of bending the extractor to add tension to it, I'd encourage you to try that. Don't go all gorilla on it. Just bent it a bit then test fire. If it's still exhibiting the same problem, bend the extractor a little more then test fire again. Repeat as necessary until the problem goes away.

It's going to back to the mothership. Gun is only 1 week old so I might as well let them handle it. Plus Springfield is only 10 miles away from me. Thanks for the replies.

I watched some videos on extractors and also took apart my other 1911 9mm. The SA EMP will not hold a round in place but my Ruger will. Looks like it has a pretty good bend already. Easier for me to send it back I guess since they are so close.

If they are ten miles away I would drive it over and ask for a call when it’s done to pick it up. (Not a lot of faith with shipping thefts up so high.)

Hopefully the issue gets fixed and the gun is back home soon.

Stay safe.
