i,m gong to convert a 3rd model model colt dragoon to accept a full size chamber of the walker dragoon . im seeing no difference in stoutness of action or construction and am thinking it will hold up everybit as well as the walker ??
thoughts or concerns.

Well, you did ask for opinions. I take it you want to fit a Walker cylinder into a Dragoon frame? Well, my opinion, why ruin a Dragoon? They're probably stouter than a Walker and handle better.

But an interesting project just the same.

Why? The Walkers cylinder is much longer.
Thus you would have to lengthen the frame and the arbor.
Be much easier to just shorten the Walkers barrel to the
Dragoons length .

So the Walker cylinder will pysically fit within the Dragoon frame with the exception of the forcing cone which you are planning to mill down in addition to any required arbor work? Is that correct?
IMHO, I would stick with perhaps a brand new Uberti Walker as the basis for your conversion, perhaps shortestning the barrel to Dragoon length and adding a lever catch. That way you can be assured of a 60 gr proof for the pistol.

Walker and Dragoon have the same frame (except for the rounded cutout on the rear of the Walker to accommodate the "Slim Jim" grips). The Walker barrel has a shorter forcing cone, but also has a much longer octagonal barrel lug projection surrounding the barrel than the Dragoon. Is this simply a matter of balance, or is there a structural reason related to the larger charge of the Walker? In looking at the pictures, it also appears the Walker has a longer cylinder arbor.

Berkley thanks for pic comparison I dint realize the wedges where totally diferant diameters??
the reasoning was that the 3rd model is a safer gun with the pins for holding hammer between caps and the fact it is a handier size .

Regarding the safety consideration, could you not add 5 more pins to the back of the original Walker BP cylinder and with the .460 S&W BPM cartridge cylinder, just keep the hammer down on an empty chamber? Seems like cutting the Walker barrel down to Dragoon length might result in a more balanced pistol...accuracy wise, quien sabe?

Same wedge for all models - just looks bigger on the Walker pic because it enters from the opposite side as the Dragoons, so the big end is showing.

Well, its been done before and I've been thinking of doing one with a Walker conversion cyl.
The arbor strength is in it's tensile strength, not the length of. You have to remember, iron cylinders aren't as strong as steel cylinders and that was the factor back in "tha day". Those arn't even concerns today.

It's akin to the big engine in the small car idea. I would rechamber to .454 Cas. or ..460 S&W and load to equivalent .45 Colt loads.
Already been thinking about the .454 length rounds for the Dragoons anyway.

It makes for a cool looking Dragoon with a long cyl.

Isn't the Dragoon cylinder long enough for the cartridge you want to convert to? The 45 Colt will easily fit in a Dragoon cylinder, with much less unrifled throat to travel through on the way to the barrel...
