Southern Ohio Gun is selling Police trade-in Ruger GP100s with a 4" barrel for $230. I'm a bit interested in these, although I'd prefer a 3". Anyway, anybody get one of these? The ad doesn't expain much, but from the pic, it looks like they have fixed sights (which I'd prefer) and bobbed hammers.

I've considered this and...

From what I've heard they're good, maybe a bit loose, but that can be fixed at a reasonable cost. I think more importantly one should take into account shipping and FFL fees, which would take the price to probably $280ish. For that price, you might be better off hitting the pawn shops and other local sources for a used Security Six or GP-100. Checking out a revolver in person is a BIG plus, and you have the option to find exactly what you want (condition, sights, bbl length, finish, and hammer) and to haggle for a better price. On the other hand if you just ordered one I wouldn't say you overpaid or did anything foolish, so I guess it just depends on where you live and how much legwork you want to put in.

I will not do a "blind" purchase

I personally will advise against this do to the fact that you do not get to see what you have bought until it is paid for. And yes, even "handpicked" ones can have problems. If you cannot handle it, dry fire it, "play" with it before you buy it, then "buyer beware." I have a story to back this up.

Before I hit financial problems earlier this month (totalled car & lost job) I owned a factory reconditioned SP-101 spurless hammer and upon the initial teardown the ejector rod fell out of the cylinder subassembly...something that is not suppossed to happen. Luckily, between the gunsmith and me we were able to fix the problem.

This happened with a firearm that I was able to inspect thoroughly before I bought, just imagine the type of problems that you could run into when you don't get to do a hands-on inspection. Just be careful in whatever you decide to do!

I have one. After cleaning it and polishing the scratches, it looks new. I doubt it has been shot much although it has obviously been carried a lot. The grips still show some wear--haven't decided if it's worth it to get new ones.

They are DAO, and converting them can be a hassle, so if you don't want a DAO revolver you should probably pass.

I found mine at a local gun shop for about what SOG is listing them--I guess the guy got a discount for buying 5 of them. Actually got mine for less than that as it was a return. A guy bought it and then traded it back to the gun shop a couple of days later. Since the shop had made money on the initial sale and also on the trade, they were able to sell it for $200 out the door the second time around. Couldn't pass it up!

I haven't had a chance to get it to the range yet... :(

I have considered one before, but haven't got one yet. I think it would be a great, simple, durable, powerful handgun to have or to lend out to my extended family in time of need.
