Any good 4 inch 44 around at a good price? The Smith all seem to be close to a grand. I have been looking at the 4 inch Taurus 444UL the double lock seems nice.

Ah didnt know they had 4 inch now. I do like the Redhawk it just is so heavy

BTR11584,

I hava four inch redhawk in .44 mag. Great Gun. My favorite revolver and I have a bunch ranging from .22 LR to 460 S&W Mag. Yes they are a bit heavy but more than worth it. It is built like a tank. Your great grandkids will be shooting it. Much better quality than a Taurus and stronger than a S&W.

The weight helps with recoil too.

If you are looking for budget, you can try the Taurus model 44. I have the 6.5" model and it has been a great gun since I bought it ten years ago.

Hard to beat a 629 Mountain Gun! This one's been tuned by Bob Munden and is slicker than butter on glass. I traded a Redhawk for a 6½" .38-44HD that was stickered at $280, then traded the .38-44 for the 629. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Ruger started making a 4" Redhawk around 4 - 5 years ago. I bought one, used in Jan. for $525. Love it! Recently shot a 3 shot 50 yard group off the bench (actually off handle bars on ATV) with all three shots touching, probably a lot of luck involved there. The grip is a little thick, front to back, but does a decent job with the recoil. The gun is a little heavy at 51.5 ozs., loaded with six 240gr. bullets, but when shooting .44 mags, weight is your best friend. You could probably shoot several boxes of .44 mag ammo through this gun at one setting without it wearing you out. Shooting it with .44 specials is no big deal, but carrying with .44 specials is, it's just too heavy to carry for the power you get from a .44 special cartridge. Personally, if I wanted to carry something like a .44 special, I get out my 1911 .45, much easier to carry, or buy a Glock or other light weight .45. You didn't say which 44 ammo you were going to be shooting. There are lots of pictures on the internet of this gun, just google 4" Redhawk.

Why do you want an ultralite 44 mag revolver? Have not shot one, but the recoil should be substantial as compared to regular steel framed 44 mag revolvers.

I would suggest that you try to shoot an ultralite revolver with regular powered 44 mag loads and determine if that is for you.

I don't own a 44 mag revolver at present. I have a 4" SW M57 Mountain Gun that would fill the same woods carry niche for me as the 44 mag.

Craig,

That's one fine looking Mountain Gun you've got there!! What's your favorite load? Does it shoot as good as it looks?

The stocks really set that gun off and look very comfortable for shooting, I know your a reloader and as such you probably get a lot of trigger time, do you use specials for plinking?

Thanks! It shoots better than it looks. If I do my part, it'll do 2"@50ds, which is not easy with a 4" lightweight .44Mag. My favorite load is a moderate one that I crank out by the hundreds on a Dillon 650, a 240gr SWC over 10.0gr Unique for about 1100fps. Not so heavy as to preclude a lot of shooting but potent enough for most duties.

I have a 329PD which weighs out at 26.7 oz on my office postal scale. It is a joy to pack all day in the hills, and is a fun .44 Special shooter. But, when you light up a 240 gr or heavier full powered magnum it ceases to be fun. I usually shoot 'cowboy level' handloads through it and enough magnums just to maintain some proficiency. For pure shooting at magnum levels I much prefer my 5.5 inch Redhawk.

Thanks for the advice. It will moslty be a 44 Special gun but will need to use and practice with strong Magnum loads for use as woods and backpacking gun. The Redhawk looks great as long as I can replcae those finger grove grips. I have also been trying to find an old 41 Magnum but no luck with that as well. Just don't want to break the bank for a woods gun.

CraigC - you probably know this but NEVER, NEVER, NEVER EVER! get rid of a Bob Munden tuned gun... Bob did a 6" Virginian Dragoon .44 for me and I sold it when I moved 20 yrs ago and I have not yet stopped kicking myself for doing so...

I carried my 4" Redhawk all day on my school resource officer day, Thursday. Had it in a Desantis holster, plus a speedloader pouch, another speedloader in a cargo pocket, radio and handcuffs. Had the Glock 27 on my ankle. It all wore fine. The Desantis holster won't fit on a regular duty belt, but wore fine on a 5.11 operator belt, which is 1.75" and reinforced.

IMO, you need a holser with a couple attachment points and a heavy duty belt if you want to carry the Redhawk. Once you outfit properly, it's no big deal. If you think a $12 Uncle Mike special is all you want, then the Redhawk may inflict misery.

Ruger Redhawk if you're looking for a double action revolver. Check out the Ruger forum for a good deal.
My lightweight S&W 329PD cost a grand, then $200 for magnaporting.

You sold a Bob Munden tuned SA? I'll bet there are just a very small number of those out there. A cowboy shooters dream gun, that was.

I'm quite happy with this beat up old 29-2 here. ;)

Paid $750.00 for it a few months back.

But to tell you the truth, I shoot this one, a 24-3, in 44 Special a lot more.

About the same price.
