G'morning,

I'm wondering if the members of this forum could help me out.
I would like to get as much info as I can about reloading for the .40-70 SS cartridge. Reference sources containing Black powder loads, BP substitute loads and smokeless loads would all be welcome.

The rifle itself is a reproduction 1874 from C. Sharps Arms. My intent is to use the .30-40 Krag cases available from Buffalo Arms.

Any and all respectable comments will be welcomed.

Thanks!

Steve Garbe & Mike Venturino's 'BP Cartridge Reloading Primer' is a good place to start for anyone wanting to load good BP ammo.

The .40-70 is reputed to be one of Mike Venturino's favorite cartridges for BP silhouette shooting.

Hope you'll let us know how you get on with your new rifle, it will be a very accurate machine...C Sharps make some pretty rifles.

:)

They will even let you talk about a C. Sharps on the Shiloh board:

It is mostly a black powder outfit though, with little use for fake powder or nitro.
I haven't fired my Winchester .38-55 with anything but black for years and will use nothing else in the .40-65 I have on order.
