.40 cal Recommendation for Carry

I’m not a big .40 S&W fan but I once had an HK USP 40 that was a really nice shooting gun and I wish I hadn’t gotten rid of it. So I’d try & get that USP Compact back off the kid & let him go get something else.

Since you are familiar with the Px4 Compact I'd go for it.
The SIG-Sauer P239 is one nice gun.
The HK P2000, P2000SK, USP Compact.
Walther P99 AS and P99c AS or the S&W licensed clones of them (OK, not hammer fired but still DA/SA with decocker).
There are probably some interesting EAA Witness (Tanfoglio) Polymer or steel in .40 caliber as well.
Alot of choices.

Cz75 compact checks all of your boxes.

Otherwise, a 1911 in 45 might be worth considering.
Glock 23.4 if you don't mind losing a hammer.
DW DWX compact if you don't mind dropping down to 9mm.

The CZ 75 as mentioned earlier is no longer made, plus its raising in price due to people realizing you can install the SP01 9mm barrel and get a semi bull pistol.
The DWX is not even out on the market yet and according to CZ reps on another forum wont be out til next year. Plus it carries a price tag of around 1700 bucks.

Sig P229, like my .40.
The pre-panic prices must still have been attractive.

Have you tried any LEO turn-ins in DAO, which are barely a 7 lb. pull and Very smooth? I was impressed by an LEO's personal P229 here at the club. He instructs at the Police Academy here (-no Kim Cattrall..-).

There is at least one attractive LEO turn-in on GB "Buy Now" for $399.
If I didn't already own a pair of P6, and a true P225 ('87) I might have bought it. Recoil with the .40 is pleasant and only a bit more than with the 9mm P229.

I love my M2.0 Compact in 40 but you asked for hammer-fired. I would vote for P2000 followed by P229 and then P239. I think the P2000 size is pretty optimal. The P229 is a little chunky for me and the P239 is chunky for the capacity. I have a P239 but it's in 9. My M2.0 compact in 40 is one of my very favorite handguns.

You had it right in the first place with the HK. I have been through a slew of pistols and with a very, very few exceptions there is nothing like an HK. And none have the reliability. They are one of the few pistols that I would buy used because you can rarely hurt one. I bought both my USP40 (also given to my Son) and a USP Tactical 45 used and they have had zero problems..

DODO BIRD,

You would be quite wrong about Federal LEO'S not shooting very often. I fired anywhere from 1500 to 2400 rounds a year with my issued BERETTA or H&K.

Right up front, I will say that the standard BERETTA 96 is borderline for durability with hot .40 S&W loads like the 1200 fps rounds we started with.

I carried a .40 S&W for 23 years before we finally went back to the 9m.m. First was a BERETTA 96D Brigadier (the Brigadier is a 92/96 with a reinforced slide) and then the H&K P2000. I liked the BERETTA, except for it's large size. That was my only complaint. I was issued one, then went oversees and got another one when I returned. The second one was so warn, that I could watch the slide move back and forth when I shot. It still worked and fed 100 %, but it was distracting. Then I was issued an H&K P2000 that I carried for about 11 years. It started to misfeed and jam. The armorer tried to fix it, but ended up issuing me another one.

I liked the BERETTA enough to buy one under the officer purchase program, but never warmed up to the H&K. The H&K was much smaller overall, similar to a GLOCK 19, but some of the guns my office were issued, rusted and I had the pins start to slide out when I disassembled my P2000 for cleaning. The P2000's outlasted the 96D Brigadiers, but part of that probably had to due with the ammo we used.

We used 155 grain jhp ammo at 1200 fps when we went to the BERETTA. It kicked a lot in lighter guns like my GLOCK 22 and SIG 229 ( I now have a SIG 229 in 9m.m. and love it).
We then went to the 135 grain jhp and finally the 180 grain FEDERAL HST ammo. I like the HST ammo so much, it is what I use in my remaining .40 S&W pistols.

I now shoot either a BERETTA 96 or a STOEGER 8040. Both shoot fine and the 8040 is concealable. It is what I would recommend to anyone who asked for a good, inexpensive .40 caliber. I know it is no longer in production, but the unpopular status of the .40 S&W right now means very reasonable prices. I paid under $300.00 each for both of mine.
I would also pickup a BERETTA 8040D model if I could find one at a reasonable price. I liked the BERETTA D models (double action only).

Jim

Good to know about federal Leo’s shooting that much. I would have assumed most would requal twice a year ~300 rounds. The Beretta/stoeger 8040 are nice shooting pistols.
