What do you guys prefer and why? I'm trying 2 figure out what cal. I want my Sig p229r DAK in.

I got a SIG 226 awhile back in .357SIG and it's fun to shoot. Later on I bought a .40S&W barrel for it for about $190. You only have to swap the barrel out in the 226 to change calibers. Uses the same springs and magazines. Same goes for the 229R DAK.

My preference is .357SIG but there's probably more ammo loaded for .40S&W and it'd be easier to get.

I agree with the last post, get both.....I have a glock 35 with both barrels and the .357 is awesome! I'll get the .357 barrel for my Sig 239 .40 next....
.....tom

I have both for my Sig 239. I carry .357 90% of the time, but its nice having the option of shooting much cheaper .40 if I'm at the range messing around.
Point of Impact doesn't seem to change between the 2 surprisingly, at least out to 25 yards or so.

I carry the .357 because I have lots of Speer Gold Dot HP's for it and I don't have any good carry stuff in .40.

I bought the gun in .357 so that's the ammo I stocked up on. Added the .40 later.

No real preference between the 2 other than I had lots of .357.
.40 is cheaper, so.......

I think you will find there isn't any real difference. Get either, or both.

Just Something about the 357SIG....

Since you asked, I will oblidge with a reply. As with most of
the forum members, I happly own both flavors and in many
makes.

Without a doubt, my favorite is the 357SIG. Something about
the crisp sound of that round zinging downrange and the thunder
of the mighty 357SIG round sounding off. What a pleasure to
send it on it's way downrange.

I'm kinda new 2 guns but is the 357sig a stronger calibur or is the 40cal stronger.

The .357 has more speed and energy, the .40 isn't all that far off and shoots a heavier bullet....alot of folks like the heavier bullets, but a whole lot of guys like the .357 magnum ballistics out of an autoloader.....like I said, I just gotta have both:D

Both rounds have produced excellent "street" results, the .40 in 165gr. and the 357 SIG in 125gr. standing out particularly well. Personally, I favor the .40, because of my rather too extensive for comfort combat experience in the 1980's and early 1990's. I learned the hard way that if a smaller bullet doesn't expand, it cuts a small hole. If a larger bullet fails to expand, it still cuts a bigger hole. So, by this logic, a .40 will make a bigger hole than a .357 in the event of the hollow point projectile getting "plugged" by clothing, etc. - and the bigger the hole, the better, IMHO.

Of course, others call me a "dinosaur" and vehemently insist that modern bullets don't fail nearly as often. I'm sure they're right - but I'll continue to carry a bigger bullet whenever possible, just in case. (That's why I like a .45, too!) Us dinosaurs are kinda set in our ways, you know? :D

I have 40 and 357 barrels for my 229. I keep the 357 barrel in it for one simple reason... It's more accurate than the 40 in THIS gun. If the 40 were more accurate I'd carry it instead.

the higher velocity and ft.lbs of energy on the .357 sig are great and all but ammo is just so expensive and there really isn't that many offerings of ammo out there especially not as many as the .40 I am sure that as time goes on and the .357 stays around, then there will be more loads for it. i personally like the .40 because that is what I have had ever since i first started carrying, and i love to practice and it just makes sense to me to to buy the rd with cheaper practice ammo and many many self defense loads.

as far as 357 vs 40... I think thats going the way of the 45 vs 9mm debate. they are both very good rounds that will do the job. one is light and fast, the other is heavy and slower.

as far as actually shooting them, I have a sig 229 in .40 (owned) and one in 357 sig (agency issued).
I find the 40 easier to shoot fast as the recoil is less and I can get back on target faster.
The 357 is much louder and the muzzle blast will be quite annoying to anyone standing by you when you shoot.

aside from the recoil and the noise, either round is enough to get the job done.

I have a Sig P239 in .40 S&W that I use as my primary IWB CCW. I absolutely love this gun. As for the .357 sig, I don't have any experience with this round but must admit that I am impressed with the ballistics that I have seen so far. I may decide in the near future to buy a drop in barrel for my P239 and use the .357 Sig mostly as a defense load but will continue to use the .40 S&W as a my normal range target load due to its much cheaper price.

Wally World, at least the one close to me, is selling .357sig in WWB for about $13.84/50 rounds. Not inexpensive, but not as bad as it could be. My first experience with the .357sig was when I purchased a replacement barrel for my G22C. That barrel doesn't see much action anymore since I picked up a Sig P229 in .357. The round definately has some pep to it, and is a hoot to fire, especially in lowlight settings (cool flash).

I've been carying a Beretta 96 for a couple of years and really like the .40 S&W. I recently picked up a Sig 229 in .40 and am also very happy with it. A couple of evenings ago, I was at the local indoor range and they had a used 229 in .357. I asked to test drive it and got to put 10 rounds through it. It was sweet to shoot and accurate, so I'm thinking I'll be getting a .357 barrel to drop in my 229. I'm not in any hurry though, until I renew my NM CHL. My current CHL was issued under the old rules where you had to qualify with each caliber you planned to carry, and .357Sig wasn't one I had at the time. When I renew, I'll shoot my 1911 and 1917 and then I'll be able to carry anything from .45 on down. The NM State Police carry Glocks in .357 Sig and the officers I've talked to seem to like the round pretty well.

Get the 40 first as the ammo is more affordable and available then save up for the extra barrel later.

I really don't get the .357SIG. Expensive ammo and not so many factory loadings.

If I want a fast 9mm bullet I'll use +P or +P+ in a 9mm, have more ammo choices, and cheap practice ammo. If I am looking between the .357SIG and .40S&W I'll go with the .40S&W.

Ideally, I'd go with a 9mm and a .40S&W. In fact, I have bought, and will probably buy some more, in both 9mm and .40S&W.

That said, for people who want one, isn't that enough reason to own one (i.e. buy what you want).

Me neither. If I wanted something with 357, it will be .357 Magnum. Don't be a sissy, get yourself a real 357, Magnum that is.

I prefer shooting the 357 sig. I have owned several pistols in 40 cal, never hung onto them for very long :scrutiny:
I too subscribe to the big bullet, big hole theory but with one caveat...shot placement, shot placement, shot placement (maybe that's 3 :D )

You are aware that .357 Sig replicates the ballistics of the Magnum round, right?:scrutiny:

Well .357 sig can come pretty close to the .357 mag IF you're talking 125 gr, not heavier bullets.

On .40sw vs .357sig, I'd go .40 easily. You are getting into 10mm ammo prices with the .357sig, while WWB value packs are $16 for .40sw. And I'll take the bigger hole on paper at the range, and upon failed expansion.

I have had a few .40S&Ws over the years. HK USP, Glock 22, Glock 27
and lastly a Glock 35. I never "liked" or go used to the recoil of the .40.
I ended up selling all of 'em.

Now I have 9mms, 45s, 357Mag and a .357SIG.
The recoil of the .357SIG is far more "comfortable" to me than the .40.
