40S&W Major Power Factor loads 170 grain LSWC, Missouri Bullet

I seem to have found a black hole in my 4 reloading manuals.

I have about a thousand 170 grain LSWC from MBC. I can't find any data on that weight of bullet in Lyman, Hornady, Hodgdon, or Sierra manuals.

I've got 231, Auto Comp, Titegroup, VV N320, and Bullseye.

I'm trying to get the rounds firing at roughly 1000 fps in order to make major power factor for USPSA. Anyone got any ideas?

Try Accurate No.7.

I used the 175gr lead data.

No.7 with the 170gr MBCo is the most accurate load yet in my XD. I'm running 8.3gr but I have not chrono'd the load yet.

Use Lyman 175gr data.
I think you may have to try a slower powder if you want to push that 170gr lead bullet past 1000fps.

Hodgdon has AutoComp 180gr XTP data. Try the starting load and run it thought the lights. It should break 1000fps or be very close to it.

I'd also suggest trying AA#7.

Thank you gentlemen. I used the Lyman data for 175 last night to load up some test rounds, but the more I look around the net, the less good I feel about them.

I'll look into Number 7. The loads are for an xD 5.25"

165gr or 175 grain lead data would be within 3%. Your scale can barely measure that much difference for typical .40S&W loads.

Lee 2nd has W231 data for 170gr lead bullet ranging from 4.0gr reaching 827fps to 5.2gr reaching 1030fps.

I use a 180-grain with 7.5 grains of Longshot to replicate SD recoil/bang in the .40- there should be a suitable load for the 170-grain pill you're shooting. I believe 8.0 grains is the max for a 180, and it moves over 1000 FPS IIRC. Longshot is ideal IMO for the .40, high velocities and reasonable pressures.

I'f you're going to load lead bullets you just have to buy the Lyman Cast Handbook 4th edition. It is THE load manual for lead bullets!!! It's not a copy of the data in Lyman's 49th Edition handbook, it has additional data from molds other than those made by Lyman. (that's a first!)

Thanks for the help. I shoot a lot of lead, so I will keep an eye out for that other Lyman manual.

These were shot out of an M&P fullsize with the same MB bullet and WSP primers
8.4g of AA#7 gave me 1023
5.6g of HP-38 gave me 1060 (beware as this is over max listed above)
6.5g of Power Pistol gave me 1057

I liked the #7 load the best, YMMV
