.41 Mag Association

The purple lined case came with the first Model 57 I bought. I met a fellow at a gun show here in Wyoming who I had known when I was living and working in Alaska. He had killed a grizzly with it when it charged him. Asked if he still had the gun and he said yep. Told me he was gong to sell it. So I told him I wanted it. he said he had gotten it in the case in 1966 or 67. Bought the gun, case, a couple of quick loaders and 5 boxes of factory ammo for 600 bucks. He was looking for some 4350 powder and I had sold all but one pound I was going to keep for myself. Gave it to him.. He gave me a great deal. It is a S serialed 57. The one I just got was made in 1986 I think. It is a 57-1. I am almost positive the grips are not original. The other 4 inch N frame case I have has a blue interior. I have 4 or 5 sets of target N frame grips and a couple sets of N frame magnas. K and J frame target grips also. I also have a larger S&W presentation case for a 6 or 6 1/2 inch gun. But it has no interior. and another presentation case that was given to me after an auction with blue velvet cloth interior. S&W?? Don't know. Colt Python.?? Don't really care. Just neat older items.

I agree I wouldn't let them build there either I'd want some space.
Are you happy with the 57? Sounds like your Daughter wanted the Ruger & that's not a bad choice. Actually a win win;)
You will enjoy shooting that one now you've got to get her a Dillon Square Deal B. :D

You know when my Brother & I got old enough Dad turned the reloading over to us, we were young, he bought components, but we loaded ALL the ammo.

I was lookin under the bench last week and looked in a wad case. There was a new unused Dillon 450 in there. One I had bought waaayyy back when. everything is still in the plastic etc. It is the original with manual primer and powder feeds. I could give her that...but she would never load with it. She really doesn't have an awful lot of time. She is a farrier by trade and trains horses and riders. She comes out a couple times a year and rides the mountains. Darn gal is a very good shot and almost great with a shotgun. I gave her a 4 inch 29-2 but it was kinda rough for her to shoot. Tried the 41 and fell in love with the round. She feels the Ruger fits her better. Had a SDB once and it was hard for me to load with. Fingers are too big. So I use a couple of 650s and a couple of Super 1050s

I know what you mean about the Square Deal B, I've got big hands too & loading on it is a little tricky, but doable.
She must be tough to shoe horses for a living.

Daughter and horses, guns and other things.

The gal is tough..and hard. She knows her stuff with horses. As far as shooting.. I taught her to shoot shotgun. Shot her first Canada goose at 8yo. Deer the next year. She was hunting with us one day the FFA teacher and some of his students were hunting on one of our places. The old fellow that owned the place wanted her there to show those boys how to shoot. She shot her 3 geese with 3 shots. They had it all on video too. As a dove shooter she almost always got her 12 birds with less than a box of shells. And as a handgunner she is like her mother. just seems to be an unconscious shooter. Better'n me Just something about some women and handguns. I taught a lot of women to shoot shotgun back east. When they get it they get pretty good.

S.B.

I had a NIB Model 58 years ago and thought it made for a great backwoods revolver. Foolishly traded it for one of those European 9mm. temptresses (in this case a Benelli B76), and would love to find another Model 58 in similar condition to get back in the .41 Magnum game.

S.B. over on the S&W forum there is a thread dedicated to the 58. It is one nice packing six-gun. It's a fixed sighted gun, but I've found very few times I actually change the sights once I've got a good zero.
The .41 Magnum could do worse than the N frame for it. A Redhawk would be nice too.

Frank V, I've seen and read that thread. I have nothing against Rugers but, seem to agree with Linebaugh about packable powerful revolvers. Just my peculiarities, I suppose.
Always wanted a 58 and now I've got the bug good. Should of boght one years ago. You know, it's hard to teach an old, fat, baldheaded man anything?

About 4 yrs ago I had a chance to buy a 58..iin like new condition. Didn't get the darn thing. The 58 would be a great one for carrying in the mountains where the grizz are. If I had to shoot one, adjustable sights surely wouldn't be necessary. Darn thing would be biting on the gun anyway. When I saw the ad in the little paper it just said 4 inch S&W 41 mag. I was hoping it would be a 58. I will find one some day soon.. Was offered a 4 inch Redhawk not long ago but declined. Redhaks just don't trip my trigger

Wow....found this thread a few years too late.Never knew that there were so many .41 fans.

I've got a 6" 57...no dash, a 3" 657 Lew Horton and a Ruger 3-screw 4 5/8" unit.

Last Christmas my Brother and Nephew gave me a Herter's .401 Powermag...kind of the forerunner of the .41. Can't find ammo for it, but works Ok with .41 mag brass squeezed down on 10mm dies (need to turn down the "collar" that leaves on the base), sorten the case a little bit, and using 10mm 180 round XTPs.

Wish I had bought a Marlin in .41 when I had the chance though.

Welcome in FullClip! Enjoy!

The S&W 58 almost has a cult following & it is one sweet packing six-gun with enough power for almost anything!
I'm not one who wants the biggest & most powerful handgun.
For me & this just my opinion, once you get to & past the recoil level of a full house .44 Mag. I need a rifle not a bigger handgun!
That's me. YMMV

Frank V.
You pretty much summed up how I feel If I need more than a 44 mag I will just use a shotgun with slugs or whatever. I bought a nice S&W 500 S&W Mag with 4 inch bbl to carry in the mountains for grizz when packing out an elk. Surprisingly it was not a bad gun to shoot. Rather shoot it than a 454 Casull. But heck it weighed 5 lbs or a bit more. That is a chunk of weight in a holster or attached to a pack strap. So..I got a Mossy 590. As easy to carry and more firepower plus easier to shoot than any handgun. A 12 ga slug at very close range is an awesome alternative to a 44 mag. And I CAN work a pump gun. BTW I sold the 500

S.B.
Go ahead & get one. I know the prices are high, but what we need to realise is the cost of a good used 58 is BELOW the price of a new S&W .41 or .44. I think it's a better value too!

NICE GUN S.B.!!! I had one just like it in .44 Magnum many years ago...a deer killin' machine...

I have two 58s...both had been "customized" before I bought them. One is a first year of production 1964 that has been parkerized. The second is a 70s vintage that someone have slicked up by a gun shop in Idaho. Mag-Na-Port, smooth trigger, bobbed hammer and oversize cylinder release...it is a very slick gun to shoot...all business.

I've never had a Super Redhawk either. As someone said on another forum, "That big sucker must kick like a K 22 Masterpiece with shorts!".
