Using Starline brass headstamped 41 Special, I can't get any crimp from either my 41 Magnum Redding crimp or my 41 Magnum RCBS seat/crimp. I have found mention that Hornady Seat/crimp will produce a roll crimp and wonder if others could validate that such works for them. I am not interested in settling for a taper crimp. The belling is indeed removed by the Redding but there is no roll at the max setting.

I am aware of the option to have a die machined short and the chamfer restored, but I would still have to buy another die or a set of spacers in order to use the same frozen setting on 41 Magnum.I just would prefer to simply buy a die rather than pay for machining and spacers and tolerating the delay with the machining approach.

Any thoughts before I buy a die that might disappoint? I am frankly not a fan of Hornady dies.

Buy an extra .41 Mag seater/crimper or crimp only die and cut it/mark it.

Does someone sell .41 Spl dies? I doubt it would be cheaper than a standard .41 seater.

I found in the Guns & Ammo article re 41 Special that there was mention that a Hornady .41 Magnum seat /crimp did work, producing a roll crimp on the shorter cases.

Just buy some LEE dies, despite what people "think" , they work and work well and you will not break the bank:)

What I need is testimony from someone who actually tried roll crimping on a 41 Special length case. So far I know my RCBS and Redding don't work except at Magnum case length.

I went ahead and ordered the Hornady seater die for just under $25 with shipping. I will report back on how it performed. The rest of the dies I have will work fine to make up a 4-hole turret set for 41 Special.

The insert in the Hornady seater will have about a 45 degree crimp ledge. Too steep for a true taper crimp, and not nearly as much of an angle of most roll crimps. I use one for what I call a "modified" roll crimp on .32 Mag ammo. I would thing it would be adequate for .41 Spl recoil.

I received the Hornady seat/crimp die today and set it up. It crimps 41 Special perfectly, even though intended for 41 Magnum. The crimp looks very much like Walkalong's picture below, although so far done on a 200 gr lead FP. I had to change the seat stem to the flat tip.
