I have the 2nd and 4th in this picture to choose from.

I had up until today ASSUmed that the #4 shot was in fact #4 BUCK shot, but apparently it's not.

If you had to choose between these 2 rounds for HD in a .410 Mossberg 500, which would you choose?

(if there are any questions which I'd need to answer first, please let me know!)

Regardless of the size of the shotgun, bird shot is for birds, period. Buckshot is your best bet.

No reason to use anything other than 000 buck, because there is virtually no difference in pellet count.

I would not choose any of those. In a Mossberg 500E you will get better numbers from standard loads.

Specifically, Winchester Super X, 3", 5 pellet 000 Buck has patterned and functioned exceptionally well from my Mossberg .410.

Use the 000 or buy magnum slugs. Or better yet get a bigger bore and have less to worry about.

I would use #4 on larger birds, rabbits maybe. 7 1/2 is for smaller birds, rodents and clay targets.

4 Buckshot is larger pellets than #4 shot, as you have already figured out.

I have heard guys say they load some bird shot first up in their HD gun and follow it up with 0 or 00 buck.

For HD, I think you would be better off with a Mossy 20 or 12 gauge. I think 00 buck in 20 gives you 7 pellets and 00 in 12 gauge gives you 9 pellets where as .410 000 buck gives 3 pellets in standard shells and 4 pellets in 3 inch shells. The 20 and 12 gauge will have better stopping power simply because your delivering more mass at about the same velocity.

To be realistic, however the bad guy in your house isnt going to notice or ask which bore shotgun you have. All will do the job, but the larger bore shells will give a better chance of stopping him dead on the first pull.

That's similar to how I load mine. I have a mossy 500 12bore, and I use a heavy #8, then a slug, #8, slug, slug. I like the setup. As for your .410, I'd try 00 followed by a slug. I'd say that's as much power as you can get from a .410

I'd avoid slugs for SD in the 410 at this point. They are just too light and designed for smaller animals than people (wouldn't shoot a deer with one either). I think the #4 buck to 000 buck loads are what you need to use.

Maybe someone will make a better slug. If you have to use one, I'd opt for the 1/4oz ones over the 1/5 oz ones. I'd like to see a 1/3oz slug, or even a tough .375 cylinder that doesn't come apart would be OK (Brenneke KO type).

Use buck and slug for HD, bird shot is for birds. While bird shot can do the job up close...it can also make a shallow wound at not that far distances. Also I would personally stay away from the disk and BB shells made for the Judge; an interesting idea but not in my house.

I've got those exact shells standing by right now ( the 000 buckshot).
After testing the PDX-1s I found that the three disks performed about the same as 00 buck while the 12 BBs did quite a bit less. I'd rather have 4 000 pellets than 3 and BBs.

this is the pattern you can expect to see when firing '000' buck through a full choked .410

the distance was 15-21 feet

and here is what you can expect to see from a cylinder bore .410 and the same shot size at the same distance as above.

I'm saving up for a 12 gauge, but for now leaving the 000 shells with the 410.

Thanks all.
