Hi folks,

On a whim, I bought some Federal .410 "Handgun" rounds with #4 shot in them. They are 3" shells.

I understand these are for the Judge series of revolvers, but are they any use in a long gun? My little single shot Baikal will fire and extract them just fine, but the shell itself is very light compared to a 3" birdshot shell (like there is only 1/2 oz in the handgun shell).

Anyway, I have like 16 more left in the box... but I don't know what to use them for.

They will provide better performance out of a longer un-rifled shotgun barrel than they will in a rifled Judge.
Higher velocities, less pattern spread.
Whether the shot charge has any use for you is up to you to decide.

I have been thinking about getting one of the .410 revolvers just because. Seems like fun but not much practically speaking (I guess HD or varmints). Getting to the point where I would have to think about getting a bigger safe (mine's an entry level safe but over the past 5 years or so I went on a binge if you will--however, compared to some of the posters here I'm a beginner-like collector).

I got better results with .410 loads for handguns through a Marlin lever-action shotgun.
No rifling to disperse the pellets, and the longer barrel gives better velocities.

I can throw one about 25 yards accurately, after that I have trouble hitting anything with it...

Makes a neat thud when it hits something though.

I shoot 410 buck in a Bond Arms SnakeSlayerr IV. Federal handgun is a hand full but the Winchester buck or their home defense with disks and BBs is hurtful to shoot. Makes me think Fed uses slower burning powder for their handgun ammo. Anyhow big dif in recoil with a 23 oz handgun. A serious push with the Fed Handgun a vicious snap with the winchester

need to come up with a cool quote as a sig

I've got to vote for Winchester pdx1 defender ammo. But I do agree, they are no fun to shoot. But I bet they are much much less fun to be shot with.

Funner or easier to shoot out of a snake charmer type shotgun tho.

Judge is designed as a close in PD weapon but has many other uses. Typically range of a 410 PD round in my opinion maxes at about 12 yards but the 45LC can reach out to what ever you are comfortable with. Got mine for my wife as a car carry.

Really fun to shoot. If you are a volume shooter, you don't need one. If you need a little help with a snap, point and shoot situation, get a Judge.

I thought about getting a box for the single shot .410 that I have. No one uses it, considered selling it, but it would make a viable truck gun.

The Personal Defense shells on the market would probably pattern decently at 25 yards with a 19" barrel.

I agree, I have some slugs and I also got some that have three pellets of buckshot that just fit in there (in a line).

I certainly would not want to get any part of my body hit with those three pellets at any range indoors!

The PDX I keep for my savage scatter gun. At 20 yards patterns pretty well with a nice spread to the BB's and fairly central placent of the three disks. Don't own Or have shot it from a Judge. I think most of the other "handgun" type loads with buck is really just repurposed already existing stock from most manufacturers.

Leave the 'Handgun' ammo in the handguns.

There are far better loads availible for 3" long guns - Why on earth would you want 5 pellets of #4, or 3 pellets of 00, when you can get 5 pellets of 000 in run of the mill Winchester 'Super-X'?

This is just my personal opinion, take it for what it is worth,,,
.410 handgun rounds are too expensive and designed to turn the Taurus Judge into something it will never be,
Effective.

As for shooting them in regular shotguns, I have heard tell that these shells are a bit longer overall than shotgun length shells and limit the number you can actually stuff into the magazine of a Remington and/or Mossberg pumpgun further limiting the usefulness.

Why is it that you seem so hateful toward the Judge? Don't like it, don't buy one!! Its that simple. Many don't agree with you as evidenced by the sales of this weapon. For what it was designed, it is quite effective. Beyond that, I'd have to agree that some want to make it out to be the be all of firearms. That it is NOT. Not sure why anyone would want to use 410 pdx rounds in a long gun, as that is not what it was designed for. Many will argue which is best, a pdx or 3 pellet oo, and the discussion continues.

The Judge is not a toy. It may not be on your Christmas list, but my guess is that Santa might have one stuffed in the glove box of his sleigh for those who would hassle him as he makes his rounds.

To say the Taurus Judge or it's progeny (public defender, etc), is not effective is to have never been shot with one.

For point blank to close range (0 - 20 feet) - the gun firing buck shot or defender ammo, is a very destructive force putting multiple rounds into an attacker within a millisecond or simultaneous to one another will cause a body to go into shock and die.

Worried about a car jack or door kick? - a Judge will allay those fears.

No fun to shoot, but less fun to be shot with.

I have never been shot with a Taurus Judge, don't intend to be shot with a Taurus Judge and if you want to do some searching you will find quite a few real life fails of the Taurus Judge

Having to spend $20+ for ten rounds of proprietary ammunition is neither cost effective or practical effective.

One can still buy effective 9mm, .40, and .45 acp cartridges for 30 cents a round and have 15+ loaded into the gun, ready to go.
Why settle for a five shot noisemaker?

I don't hate the Taurus Judge.
I find the whole concept silly but my oh my, it did sell some guns now didn't it,,,
