Hi folks,

Picked up a Mossy 500 series in .410 today. I've been looking for a .410 pump gun for a bit now, so I snapped it up when I saw it for a good price. I'm looking forward to taking this shotgun to the range to try it out. I used one of my spent shells to test cycle the action, and the action is silky smooth.

I cleaned the packing grease out of the barrel and the visible parts of the assembled action, and I plan to completely disassemble it after I put a few dozen rounds through it. Sound right? I'm not an aficionado, but I have read that you want to fire it a bit before the first major cleaning.

I think I'll stick to the single-shot .410 for hiking, but this pump gun might just see some time on the trail as well.

Sounds about right. Since the barrel is clean you prolly won't have any issues with sticky extraction. If it patterns as well as the one I've shot I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I'm really happy with this gun after running maybe 75 shells through it today at the range. Patterns well beyond my expectations.

Had a few problems loading shells from the magazine, but I think the dowel in there was causing problems. I removed the dowel after I got home this afternoon. Also, this gun doesn't like to reliably load Winchester AA skeet shells. Loading from the breech (which is how I shoot skeet, one shot per person per throw), no problems with any shells.

Try shooting high brass loads only. It wouldn't be the first time I've seen a pump .410 hate low brass shells...

Also, try putting a little gun oil around the magazine tube follower and working it in by using the dowel or something to push on the follower. I found that I needed to do this the first time I took my Mossberg 500 out and it immediately knocked out any little issues I had. Good luck!

I disassembled and sprayed my Mossberg shotguns down with diesel fuel I keep in a spray bottle out in my work shed.
Then I blew the residue off with an air hose.
New Mossbergs have some sort of sticky preservative grease applied at the factory and it needs to be cleaned off and the gun properly lubricated prior to use.

Definately a good idea to clean the magazine tube while you are at it.

They also put some sort of sticky crap in the barrels, especially on the rifled slug barrels that needs to be scrubbed out.

I bought a mossy 500 in .410 when my step son wanted to start hunting with me. He was 8yo at the time and a 20 ga scared the crap out of him. Every dove hunt I took him on, he killed birds with it. It's a great little gun for a kid to start with. He's 13 now and graduated up the a 12 ga.

well i am the owner of a new mossberg 500 .410, dark swirly wood stocks just a little dandy, ive killed more varments with a h/r .410 then any of my 12s or 20s,number 4 shot shoots like a laser beam ,devastating on armidillo digging around my foundation and septic tank,so it inspired me to get a pump.got me a mess of winchester buckshot 3 ball,my wife and daughter can handle it well.once i cleaned it well it is eating 3 inch remington long range express shells like candy.

me too!

I was Christmas shopping at Wal-Mart for someone else - I couldn't resist the Mossberg 410 pump they had and ended up getting a present for myself. :D
