Newbie here: I've searched without success to determine the manufacture date of my J. C. Higgins 101.7 410 sxs. It appears to be Stevens 311 manufacture, but the marking do not conform to what I've found online. The only markings are capital letters U R and slightly smaller capital letters A E each in individual circles.

There should be a letter and # designation on the barrel. ( such as 2E or 4C )

You might need to view under the furniture to find it, but it should rest underneath the trigger housing......somewhere.

"The model 311 started as the Springfield 5000 around 1920 with model designation changing to 5100 in 1931. Around 1940 it became the Stevens model 311. It was discontinued in 1989.

If it was manufactured between 1949 and 1968 there should be a small circle with a number and letter stamped between the trigger and the hinge pin. The letter reflects the year of manufacture.

A 1949
B 1950
C 1951
D 1952
E 1953
F 1954
G 1955
H 1956
I 1957
J 1958
K 1959
L 1960
M 1961
N 1963
O 1963
P = 1963
R to V = 1964 - 1968"

Got it, thanks!"10L" was such a small stamp that my tired old eyes overlooked it. Now I'm wondering what the stamps on fore-stock and hinge mean. On both places there is "U R" stamped over "A E"... all capital letters, and the A and E are inside circles. Any thoughts on those? Also, what is a reasonable replacement value for insurance? Thanks from middle Georgia!

Well, unfortunately I am not an appraisal expert.

With that said, these were high-production run weapons sold almost exclusively in department store chains such as Sears.

From my feeble searching I was able to find prices advertised anywhere from $155 -$1094.

I was able to verify completed sales in the neighborhood of $200-$700.

Hope this helps !

Those figures are in line with what I'm seeing in various online sites. Still wondering about the UR and AE stamps...any thoughts on them? Thanks for your help!

No clue. Perhaps someone else could chime in on those.

Most millwrights have a makers mark, its possible that could be one or both of them if they are in a similar area on the weapon.
