i heard that the .410 can take 45 long colt ammo. does that mean that a 410 pump shotgun would become a pump rifle if you loaded it with 45 colt ammo??

thanks .....Bill

No, not all .410s can use .45LC - very few actually can. Unless the manufacturer specifically states that you can do that, don't.

i dont know about pumps. but there ares several 410/45LC revolvers and NEF makes a 410/45lc breach brake

Why would you wanna fire a bullet down a smooth bore anyway, even if it wouldn't blow up? Accuracy? What's that?

I have a Contender barrel, 10", has a screw on choke and a rifled barrel. When shooting shot loads, the choke is rifled straight so as to stop the spin of the shot cup. Take the choke off and you have a 7 inch .45 colt with a 3" chamber which causes a LOT of free bore and hurts accuracy. However, it'll still shoot 7-8 inch groups at 100 yards with a scope, not THAT bad at shorter ranges. Take that rifling out of it, though, and the bullet could wind up tumbling into the dirt at 25 yards or over the backstop and out into the bay on our range, depending on the whims of the tumbling bullet. So, what's the point in wasting lead like that let alone endangering the health off the area's shrimping fleet????

And, don't even think of shooting that .45LC with the choke installed. If you want a rifle for your .410, buy foster slugs. They have about the energy level of a .357 magnum out of a handgun.

Drifting off just a bit, did you ever consider loading the .45 colt into a brass 410 shell to cut down a bit on the distance to the rifling in that contender barrel?

Well, not that, was thinking for a while that perhaps .444 marlin might work for brass, but never got any to see. .45/70 was a no go, case head way big. Also loaded a 340 grain hard cast .45/70 bullet out to a long OAL to try to narrow that gap, sized to .451 of course. However, that bullet leaded the bore with much velocity at all. Sure looks mean in the case, though. :D

It's a good barrel for small game to 20 yards or deer up to 50 yards and I've since replaced that barrel's big game duties with a .30-30 barrel. No since trying to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse, or perhaps a 50 yard gun into a 100 yard one. :D TC did or maybe still does offer a .45 colt barrel, no shotgun capability, proper chamber dimensions, but I'd as soon shoot my Ruger revolver anyway in that caliber. Besides, the hot stuff in the Contender can hurt a guy. The Ruger just rolls up in the hand.

I hang on to that .45/.410 barrel because it's fun to play with on clay birds, is decent on jumped rabbits if I did that anymore, and is quite versatile in the survival roll if I needed that in the future.

I couldnt ever see a use for a .410

Maybe a 7 year old's bird gun?

As far as accuracy, I don't think I've taken a deer over about 50 yards--I'd think that a 45LC out of a .410 smoothbore could manage (but that's a completely uninformed thought on my part, I've never even tested for accuracy).

.410s are neat and fun shotguns. I've killed dove with one. You have to be SPOT ON the bird with a full choke .410 and you ain't taken long shots. However, when I was a kid, I took a teal at a good 50 yards with a .410, only a couple of lead 6s in him, had to pull the head, but I got him, still remember it. :D

.410 makes a good rabbit and squirrel shotgun. Shoots light, points quick, great for running rabbits. I ain't runnin' out to buy one. Traded my pump .410 in on a Savage M340 in .30-30 when I was a kid. But, I wouldn't mind owning a nice little side by side double to play with in .410. Only thing I have now other than my old 16 gauge single is 12 ga guns. I am planning to get a O/U in 20, though.
