bought 410 for varmints and something for my wife to shoot. i had originally thought it could also be something she could use for home defense being that my 12 gauge is a bit more than she can handle.i am now rethinking it being a effective HD weapon.i use 3" magnum buckshot loads for it but would it be effective enough to stop someone who has thick clothing on or jacked up on drugs

Yep!
Buckshot is buckshot, whether it comes out of a .410 going 1,300 FPS or a 12 ga going 1,125 FPS.

The differance is that the .410 load has far less pellets in a shell then the larger bores.

Still, a thug jacket is not going to make them bounce off harmlessly.

I might suggest your wife would have been better served for HD with a 20 ga pump-gun, but it's too late now.

home defense with 3" mag buckshot? definine overkill. How about "tactical" reduced recoil buckshot. That will be effective without intimidating the shooter.

Standard 12 ga trap loads should be effective at home defense range. The trap load is not optimal, but should stop all but the most insane/drugged out folks.

longspur,in a 12,16,or 20 gauge I agree with you that at close living room ranges a trap or dove load would work more times than not.
They certainly wouldn't be laughing at you after you cut down on them at said range with said load.
What I have personally seen as well as the after math of others using shotguns on game convinced me of this.
But it's a hard opinion to sell with a lot of guys here.

Get her some of the new Hornady buckshot loads and she will be able to stop any threat at HD ranges. They consist of five 000 buck in a special shotcup that keeps them from deforming when fired. These were originaly developed for the JUDGE revolver, and infact are marketed as .410 handgun rnds.

.410 isn't my first choice in self defense weaponry but in a house, from room to room, a 3" load of #4 shot in the gizzards or groin will pretty well knock the sap and wind from all but the most determined home invader.

In their case, shoot them twice, or even three times.

I just bought a couple of boxes of the Winchester .410 buckshot. Five pellets of OOO buck should make a formidible load at close range, although I doubt they'll pattern well much past 10 yards or so. Not that much of a step down from 8 OO buck pellets from the reduced-recoil 12 gauge, at least up close.
