Hello everyone. I'm here with another project again. Everyone knows how woefully underpowered the current 410 slug loadings are today with the exception of the brenneke slugs. I recently got ahold of a BPI 4th edition small bore shotgun reloading manual. One peticular loading got my attention. The load was the small game slug load with a 93 grain lead ball and a special wad. It lists charge of 28 grains of Lil'Gun and a velocity of 2400 fps and a psi of 9200 psi. That equates to roughly 1,190 ft lbs of energy. The issue is I think they designed the load with the undersized .375 dia ball for safety with various choke diameters, thus accuracy in a cylinder bore is pretty poor. My Saiga 410 semi auto has interchangeable chokes and came with a full and a cylinder bore. With my past experiment s fiddling around looking for a better buckshot load I know that a standard 000 buck pellet fits perfectly in a standard birdshot wad like the WAA410HS or the RemSP410 wad. these loads were a good fit in a cylinder bore gun but should not be used in a tight choked gun. The federal taurus judge loads duplicated my loads and almost identical in construction so I quit that project. I didn't shoot enough of them for it to be worth it. The prototype load for the BPI load was a single 000 buck pellet at 2600 fps and a psi of 9800 psi for total of 1,096 ft lbs of energy. With my gun being able to have a cylinder bore I thought about it and thought what if I cut a wad back to act as a patch or a sabot for a single 000 buck pellet. I was thinking about using something like a bx410 stump wad from BPI for a gas seal, then a non compressible buffer so not to raise pressures too much, and a cut back WAA410HS wad to hold the ball on top and a roll crimp to finish it off. I have decided on the WAA410HS because the wad is relatively thin and the pedals are slit the full length of the wad so while it cradles the ball well, it should separate cleanly. I checked the diameter of the whole thing with my gun and it passes though my barrel with light hand pressure. I think if I can get a single hard cast nickel plated pellet up to 2600 fps, maybe faster if accuracy and above all pressure allows it I would be very happy and might make a good small to medium game slug for raccoon, fox, coyote, or what have you. As the weeks progress and I have time to work up a load I will keep everyone posted as to it's progress.
