I am having a hard time getting decent groups at ranges past 50 yds. I can get 6 shots into 2.5" at 50 about every time, but at 100 yds I not sure that I could call it a group, more like a pattern around 10-12". I am not sure if I am the cause or not, but I dont think there is anyway that I'm that far off. I would like to get it down to around 5-6" at 100 yds. Your opinions:confused:?

This to me points to the sights not being something your eyes can work with well. If you're doing 2.5" groups at 50 yards, the problem isn't in your "fundamentals", you're a pretty damn good shot just right there (and with a decent gun I might add).

Hmmmm.

What gun and what sights now?

Do some research on "silhouette" sights. Still "iron sights" vs. "glass".

629 pc light hunter, nikon monarch 1.75x scope, rested on bags(I'm not that good of a shot:eek:).

What ammo are you shooting? It seems to me that some ammo that may be designed for close-range personal defense situations may not be so accurate out to 100yds. Yes....no....maybe?

What bullet?
What Target?

You may not be able to clearly see a small target center with the 1.75 scope at 100 yards.
Try something with a big center, like one of these:

You need something big enough to clearly see the cross-hairs seperated from the aiming point.

Bullet weight could cause flyers at longer range if they are light for caliber.
I would expect 240 grain loads to shoot just a slightly larger spread at 100 then at 50.

In other words, if you can get 2 1/2" groups at 50, you should still be able to get 6" groups or so at 100.

I've tried hornady 300 xtps, winchester 240 sp's, georgia arms in 200,240,and 300g, and magtech in 240. Some shoot a little worse than others, but not much difference in any of them group wise (large elevation changes between 200g and 300g). I plan on trying some buffalo bore 270g, but haven't got around to it.

I had wondered about higher magnification, but decided against it for less visible "shake" in my sight picture when hunting. I should try some different targets, hadn't thought of that.

What about when the bullet slows to lower than the speed of sound, I heard that with .22's you either want to be over or below that(1100fps?). Keep the ideas coming.

Changing to appropriate-sized targets is likely to help a lot.

Pay close attention to your trigger pull to make sure you aren't commiting some small error - especially "bumping" the trigger. Small errors at the gun can easily be huge at 100 yds.

Good Luck !!

hossdaniels: Sir; I use iron sights only. 100yds with the proper combination isn't overly difficult. I have neurological damage with vision issue's. [not bragging]

What has helped me the most @ distance. Forget paper, use water bottles, golf balls, rocks, and what ever other mess. It gives me something to shoot at.
Am I 80%? NO. Am I better when I go after Paper? yes.

We shoot on a semi regular basis, starting out with junk, knock the edge off and progress to what ever. Call it the FUN FACTOR

These are some mighty fine answers; one thing puzzles me. 2.5" @50yds = somewhat 5" at 100yds
Using bullet 'A' 2.5" using bullet 'B' 2.5" =somewhat of 2.5"?
Have you given thought to someone else giving it a go?

Please follow up. My curiosity. Thanks

No haven't let anyone else try it. I also agree 2.5" at 50 should equal 6" or less at 100. It really could be me, but even IF I dont call any fliers, still have plenty of them.
