44 ammo for deer

Any recommendation on 44 mag ammo that will reliably expand out of a handgun but hold together at carbine velocity. Trying to find a load for both to buying ammo simple as I do not reload yet. I'll be hunting deer and hogs.

Yup a good cast bullet, is what I would use... for reliable feeding in the carbine I would load up a RNFP, with a nice wide meplat, like the 250gr WFN from Beartooth.

Or Hornady XTP's.

44-anything will be plenty for a deer. my personal favorite....240 grn Federal Hydra-shocks. Taken two deer with a combined tracking distance of 0 yards.

If I had to use a factory round in my 77/44 and Marlin lever it would br Winchester WB JSPs. Cheap, accurate and effective. I've had good luck with XTPs outta my 629s, but outta the carbines they tend to disintegrate on good size deer. For reloading, I use either a Nosler or Remmie 240gr JSP.

Cast bullets tend to be hard and do not expand . Any ole cheap sp or hp that is a 240 gr will work fine for deer or hogs. If you want to use a premium bullet,fine but it is not needed.

Three years now...

no track, one shot kills. Hornady 300gr. JHP/XTP. 1150fps. @ muzzle/1064@ 50yds/1031@100yds. Dreading the year I have to buy another box.

FWIW, WWB 240gr JSPs are a little over pressure in my 77/44. Not enough to make me stop shooting them, but still. They'd sure get the job done, though.

My 240gr XTP handloads peel all the way down to the base of the bullet when fired into soft dirt out of my 77/44. I envision them dumping a healthy dose of energy into a deer..
