I came across this cartridge. The .44 Kunz.

It's ostensibly a .30-06 case cut down to 1.9" and necked up to hold a .44 caliber bullet. A spitzer in the picture.

Reloadersnest has six loads listed in jacketed and cast lead from 200 to 465 grains.

Anyone know anything about this?

A maximum loadable diameter bullet for an 06 or .308 case seems an interesting and worthwhile wildcat, but I'm not seeing the point of cutting it down to 1.9 inches/48mm. Why not just go with the standard .308's 51mm or the .30-06's 63mm?

I believe that's an Indiana deer wildcat. Indiana has somewhat peculiar/specific legislation requiring the use of 'pistol' calibers in rifles for deer hunting. Since in essence the law stipulates a diameter of .357 or more and a minimum and maximum case length (although 1.9" seems a bit long to fit my theory - never mind, let's not let the facts get in the way of an assertive response), there are lots of folks cutting down rifle cartridges to meet the law requirements. The 45-70 cut down to case length max is quite popular, for example.

There was a .44 Kurz (aka 10.5x17R) revolver cartridge used by Webley (?) late 19th Century but that most definitely preceded the 30-06...
