I was loading a 240g tapered cone hard lead slug from Penn bullets. I was doing an accuracy test for my 4 inch Redhawk.
I went as high as 11.7 grains of Unique. That was the max per the Lyman 49th. They came out at 1240 fps.! Primers were a bit flat but no other high pressure signs.
10 grains of Unique (240 grain lead/plated) is an easy number to remember and a pleasure to shoot. Plenty of power too. Good luck and welcome to The High Road.
I used Unique when I first started with the 44. You can find loads for unique for just about every gun out there. I settled on HP.38 for my light loads and 2400 for all my mag loads.
I used to load 8.2 grains of Unique under a 250 grain Keith SWC in .44 Special cases (for use in a model 29 S&W), you're fine at 8.5, but I'm guessing probably a bit dirty.
