just getting started and need double check on load
starline 44 nickel brass
cci primer
unique 8.5 gn
montana gold 240 gn

Welcome to the forum!

Alliant shows 10.3gr as a maximum for 240gr so 8.5gr should be fine.

I was loading a 240g tapered cone hard lead slug from Penn bullets. I was doing an accuracy test for my 4 inch Redhawk.

I went as high as 11.7 grains of Unique. That was the max per the Lyman 49th. They came out at 1240 fps.! Primers were a bit flat but no other high pressure signs.

Long story short, you are good to go at 8.5.

thx guys just wanted to be sure I was right. I kept seeing different loads with cast and jacketed, figured easier to ask than make a bad mistake

10 grains of Unique (240 grain lead/plated) is an easy number to remember and a pleasure to shoot. Plenty of power too. Good luck and welcome to The High Road.

You're fine at 8.5gr. A 240gr SWC over 10.0gr Unique is my most used load in my most used centerfire cartridge.

I used Unique when I first started with the 44. You can find loads for unique for just about every gun out there. I settled on HP.38 for my light loads and 2400 for all my mag loads.

I used to load 8.2 grains of Unique under a 250 grain Keith SWC in .44 Special cases (for use in a model 29 S&W), you're fine at 8.5, but I'm guessing probably a bit dirty.

I finally settled on a good load for my SBH Bisley:
10.5 grs. Unique pushing a 240 gr. SWC.

Other powders I use for my .44mag., Red Dot and 4227, and right now I am working up a load using Trail Boss--looks promising:)
