Have a Ruger Redhawk 44 mag. Getting the barrel cut down to 5" and customozed by Bowen. Thinking about adding Magna Porting to reduce recoil/muzzle flip. How well does the porting work? How much compared to a regular barrell, does the porting reduce recoil and reduce muzzel flip. I will be carrying this in bear country and it is important to me to get an additional shot off accurately and quickly if needed. Thanks.

Magnaporting

Hi Sam! I had my S&W 629 6" magnaported. I had the gun for about 3 month before I had it sent for porting. I fired about 300 rounds of full 44 mag before I got it back. I honestly was disapointed with the reduce recoil I thought I was going to get from it. However after a couple of shooting outings I discover that the muzzle flip was significantly reduced and I could shoot a bit quicker my second shot. This is my only experience with any gun that have been magnaported. I also imagine that the shorter the barrel the more it becomes a factor, I could be wrong. Good choice on a Bear gun I also would like to find a 4" .44 to carry in the woods, the 6" gets heavy at times.

Porting a 44 mag....

I have a 7.5 inch Redhawk that was Magna-Ported. It has the Gold Bead an V sights on it. I like to shoot it, but with jacketed bullets only!!! With cast bullets the front sight gets plated with lead. Real pain in the B--t to get cleaned off. It does seem to reduce recoil by about 15% or so. :(

All my .44s are ported. Almost all my .357s are ported.

The only drawback to porting is that it takes a few extra minutes to clean the ports: typically about two, but sometimes as long as five if there's a lot of lead built up on the rib.

I have a 7.5" Super Redhawk that was ported by Weigand Combat. Recoil is somewhat reduced, but the real difference is in muzzle climb. Big reduction. I can dump a cylinder of full loads into the black at 7 yards about as quick as I can pull the trigger. Lots of fun and a head turner at the range. Only drawback to porting is increased muzzle blast. Ouch! Definitely need some hearing protection.

Have a Model 29 3" bbl. That is MagnaPorted. Took it and my 629 Mtn Gun to the range this afternoon to shoot up a bunch of old odd ball reloads.

It wasn't long until the Mtn Gun went back in the Blazer to rest and the remainder of the Magnums were fired with superior accuracy, reduced recoil and substantially less muzzle climb from the 3" 29.

Front sight turns gray after 6-10 shots but ole well. For my money its worth it. :)
