And the gun I'm still looking for is Ruger's discontinued Model 96 levergun in .44 Magnum. Sort of a mini-Savage 99.

Keep hunting! I absolutely love mine. That short throw lever is great. And it only weighs 5.5 lbs loaded. I can carry it all day long. My grandpa had a pair of 96/17s as well, but I chose other guns over them when he passed. My uncles got them. One uncle sold em all for pennies on the dollar not long after.

Brings back so many memories when discussing the .44 Mag. in long guns. When I graduated from college in 1968 I purchased a Ruger .44 Mag auto loading carbine for my dad. A few years later he was able to take a 198 pound Adirondack 8 pt. buck with one of my handholds, one shot.. I have that rifle now and look at it with so many memories. Now that I compete in Cowboy Action I would take a lever action in a second.
