Hey guys, I just put a NIB S&W 329 Alaska backpacker on layaway for use as a hunting sidearm and the raw cool factor. I'm not super familiar with revolvers but i do know basics and own a s&w 360pd. My main question is what would the best type of holster be for carry while hunting. I hunt in upper Minnesota not too far from the Canadian border so i will be wearing heavy warm clothing alot, but not all, of the time ill be hunting and carrying this gun. Thank you.

I use a cheap (uncle mikes) owb with my smith and Wesson 44mag. Inherited it from my grandfather who actually killed a lot of deer with it. I always laugh when i mess with it. He put a laser on it ans used it as a HD weapon also!

He put a laser on it? Funny! What model is it? I've found that the cheap uncle mike IWB holsters work pretty good for my smaller CC pistols, a sig p238 and s&w 360. I'm just trying to figure out if it'd be better to use a shoulder type or a classic on the belt holster. It needs to be easy to get to while I'm wearing my hunting bibs and heavy coat.

I would think that dealing with multiple clothing layering options would push more toward a chest or shoulder rig than a belt holster.

Something like a Simply Rugged Chesty Puller or 7X Leather chest holster should fit all of your needs. Can be made small enough to work without a jacket but will expand to fit over a hunting parka or bibs.

BTW: Hold on tight to that 329 when you touch it off. Those scandium frame .44 Mags can be brutal in the recoil department with full power loads.

Take a look at Diamond D Custom Leather. I have two of his "guides choice" holsters and couldn't be happier. I like them so much I plan on ordering two more.

Check the angle of the gun butt before buying and try to imagine yourself wanting to draw your pistol quickly. I looked closely at the Guides Choise holsters but, chose the other because of synthetic materials(leather deteorates over time)and longer last materials. Hunting conditions are far worse on holsters than most think. Another good one is from an Alaskan manufacturer

If you opt for a shoulder holster, I would recommend a vertical, not a horizontal holster. At least with a vertical holster, you don't have to worry about your handgun falling out if you either forget, or manage to not snap the strap when you bend over.

RouigeLeader just what straps are you refering to, there is none on the Survival Systems holster??? Or have you been on the Alaskan Outdoors Handgun forum and refering to that one? Any modern sythetic(plastic) holster is form fitted to your handgun. I dare say, that I could stand on my head without my pistol coming out of this holster.

Linked below is what my Ruger Redhawk .44 mag rides in. It's the Huckleberry Shoulder Rig, made by Grassburr Leather Works out of Boerne, TX. I had him fit the holster so that it's about 4-5" higher than shown in the photo. I didn't want it riding at waist level...I preferred upper abdomen area. The fit is perfect, and craftsman can be beat. Great guy to do business with. Met him at a local gun show a year or so ago. Shown in the pic is the left-hand version - mine is right-hand and a stained mohogany color....very, very nice!

I have an Uncle Mike' Sidekick. The strap I am referring to is the one that holds the revolver in the holster. If it's not properly snapped, the revolver will fall out of a horizontal holster. I know, I've had mine fall out.

All of my hunting holsters are cross draw. I wear them at about the 11:00 position it is very comfortable and easily accesable as they align well with the flaps of my jackets.
Also very nice when you sit down as they dont get pushed into my ribs.
Most of my revolvers have fairly long barrels so your results may be slightly different.

RougeLeader, as far as I know all Uncle Mike's holsers fit a variety of guns not just one gun. Pretty cheaply made aren't they? I use one for my Deer gun a S&W 629 Classic for hunting and wouldn't trust much about them. In fact broke the front lens ring on my Ultra red dot while getting out of my tree stand several years back.

The Uncle Mike's does fit a lot of guns, but it was the only shoulder holster I could find locally that fit the four inch Trackers my wife and I own. The retaining strap is adjustable, and it does hold the revolvers in the holster, as long as the retainer is snapped.

Thanks everyone. I think ill end up checking out some shoulder holsters when I pick the gun up in a month or two. I put in a special order for a kimber Solo CDP that I want to pick up first.
