Im finding some of my brass after resizing to be at 1.273, which is less then the 1.275 trim length. are these ok to use, and what is the absolute minimum for this brass? Thank you.
They are fine to use. As far as minimum length, the 44 Special has a case length of 1.16" so you're still well above that. If you approach that length, might want to start using 44 Special load data.
Yes, it's ok and I can't get into SAAMI's cartridge drawings but the minimum is usually the max trim length minus .020" but not always.
I wouldn't go any where near 44spl case length with 44mag load data.
Stay with in the Max to minus .020 and you'll be ok with 44 mag load data.
Your brass will vary a few thousandth even if you trim them. As long a the variation isn't enough to affect your crimp you are good to go. .002 is an awfully tiny amount when talking case length. Open your caliper or micrometer that far and see how small it really is. In other areas , such as bullet diameter, .002 is huge and can cause big problems.
Not an answer to your question, but just my experience. I started reloading 44 Magnums in '88. I now have 3 revolvers, one Contender and one lever gun in that caliber. I have reloaded everything from 123 gr balls over a bit of Bullseye to 310 gr. ingots over near max loads of WC820, but I haven't trimmed a case that I can remember. I have produced some very accurate loads (>1 1/4" @ 50').
