Less flash and snap than a .357 magnum but equal or greater power, depending on your load choice.
I'd be surprised if this were the case. The big bullets tend to come out slow and when adequate power is reached, they tend to overpenetrate.

The 125gr JHP .357 generally can be said to have better stopping power on a man than the .44 mag, which is made to penetrate the thick hide grit and muscle of an animal. All the energy in a bullet is wasted once it leaves a bad guy (unless it hits another bad guy).

I have a .44 mag I'd love to shoot .44 Specials out of, but their prices are almost as high as the magnums.

The .357 would be tough to beat in any regard.
