.44 special factory defense loads

I enjoy my CA .44S Bulldog- a little difficult to carry in a pocket, even though it fits, because of the hammer snag on drawing. CA offers a DA hammer (no spur) for it that I'd buy if I was going to carry that way.

Pocket carrying a revolver with a hammer is a training issue. When I pocket carried my Colt Detective Special, or my Bulldog, I trained myself to place my thumb on the hammer when drawing. Slides right out of the pocket like a hammerless gun. Do it every time, like when you're just taking the gun off at home.

I noticed on the ammunitiondepot webpage linked in an earlier post in this thread that the Blazer 200gr GD was listed as 920fps MV.

I ran some AL-cased CCI Blazer 200gr Gold Dots thru the Chrony a few months ago with my Bulldog (2½" barrel) ... they averaged only 778.3fps (ES:26.64 SD:11.04) ... which made them much more controllable than if they had run 920fps. ;)

Perhaps CCI offers more than one Blazer loading featuring 200gr GDs?

HexHead has provide the answer ... thumb on hammer and fingers around the rubber grip allows easy removal from any but a tight pocket. I periodically carry a CA Bulldog in a coat pocket.

I also bought an extra DA hammer ... planning on installing it on my 2nd Bulldog, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. It is Project #3187 :)

This is good advice, if all you have is a snubby with a hammer. I would always opt for a hammerless model if I had a choice.

I don't really consider the CA .44spl Bulldog to be a pocket gun. Maybe for a bigger guy, but not for me.

Comparing my S&W 637 and the .44 Pitbull- surprisingly the .44 is only about 1/2" longer and 1/2" taller, wider by maybe less than 1/4".

The validity of a caliber and gun is not measured by how well it carries in a pocket, unless it is marketed for that purpose. I know of nothing about the .44 S&W Special or any gun offerings that would vaguely imply carrying it in a pocket.
