44 Special for home defense

Skeeter Skelton kept a .44 Mag. revolver loaded with .44 Specials as his home defense gun. Can't get a better recommendation than that, IMO.

hhhmmmm...44 special defense loads...

Federal lead semiwadcutter hollowpoint; Winchester Silvertip jhp; Speer Gold Dot jhp; CCI Blazer (aluminum cased) jhp; Hornady XTP jhp; I think CorBon makes a moderately 'hot' load; I have a few boxes of the Hornady XTP's stashed for use in my S&W 629 Classic PowerPort revolver

the 'cowboy' load thing isn't bad in itself (low recoil = better gun control for shot placement), it's more that it is a solid bullet that will penetrate more than it expands (less energy transfer into soft tissue of target & less tissue damage)

The 44 special is wonderful as a self defense gun. A big heavy JHP moving at moderate velocity--I sure wouldn't want to be down the hallway catching those rounds.

Doubletap Ammunition loads a 200gr. Gold Dot load that I've heard very good things about.

I'd say it's about ideal for defense against two-legged predators if we're talking handguns.

In a darkly lit house late at night or early in the morning, if the boogey man cometh, I want something that makes a big hole with as little flash and noise as possible. The old 429421 Keith bullet loaded over a small pinch of Bullseye or 231 will do just fine, and doesn't need to expand. Muzzle blast from the "hot" loads can blind you if you forget to close your eyes. That big 250grain bullet will do the job at normal .44 Spl velocities. As for the lower noise level~~~I don't want to wake up the neighbors. I might just want to dispose of the body in a quiet manner. Know what I mean? ;-)

Exactly. That's the number two reason I practice most of my shooting with my eyes shut. Saves on safety glasses, too!

Great advice, there! If at all possible, you're going to want to cover up a self-defense shooting. I keep a bunch of potted daisies around just so I can plant them over any hastily dug holes in my back yard...

I'm sure this post was in good fun, but you're new here. Let us get to know you and your sense of humor before unleashing such gems of wisdom...

:scrutiny:
