I have the option to buy a like new 624 6.5" barrel S&W. (.44 Spl.) It is offered at $675 shipped. How is that pricewise. How about the SS Taurus .44 Spl. 6" barrel? How does it compare and how much should it be? I have a chance at one of those. Thanks. AC

624-3s seem to be going for that now, its no steal but a fair price. And with how much "pre-lock" and "pre-MIM" Smiths are increasing in value you will always be able to get your money back if you sell it.

Expensive but will probably continue upward trend

In a word- get it! I doubt we will see them affordable again. The world does not love the .44 special. Too bad.

I'll bet you can march into your local gunstore and leave with a new 6" 629, SKU 163606, for nearly that same amount. It won't be subject of a recall, as many 624's were. It will have the latest endurance enhancements - and have the lifetime waranty, as well. And, when you want to load some 'Keith-level' .44 Specials - most of us refer to them as .44 Magnums - you are ready. Buy a Hogue .500 magnum grip from S&W Accessories ($35), and your wrist will be ready for the Magnums, too.

I had a LNIB 6.5" 24-3 and a new Heritage 6.5" 24 - both gone now, replaced by the 6" 629. I know the purists will be saddened - but I hate cleaning blued revolvers - SS is so much more forgiving. That new 6" 629, bought new 8/05, has been great - the trigger was helped, post break-in, by Wolff lighter trigger return spring and a full-power hammer leaf - and those .500 Magnum grips. I couldn't care less that it has MIM parts and the IL. I have to admit, however, that Heritage 24 was a beaut - but only because I wouldn't use it for fear of damaging that finish. Of course, if you have to have that 624...

I have certainly considered a .44 Mag., but I do so like the .44 Special. I also think the Blued Smiths are things of beauty, although they do take a bit more care.:)

It will be double hard to find a blue 24 reasonable.:(

I can live with stainless if need be. A THR member has a 4" I am waiting to hear about and see pics. I will have to be patient.

I said I'd like one of the new ones, but here is a sweet 4" .44 Special from the 1980's, wearing Fitz grips:

The only 624's recalled were those that were part of a limited run for Lew Horton some years ago. I found this Horton gun 2 years ago in a pawn shop, boxed, tools, manual and two sets of grips for $375. Needless to say I could not get my wallet out fast enough. If you really want one, buy it and do not look back as they are fine guns with that nice slender barrel.
