What power and type scope would you pick for a 44mag handi rifle used for deer hunting and shots out to 100yards? Currently have a Nikon BDC 2-7 but I dont like all the circles and stuff.

Personally, for a hunting rifle, I have no use for LPVO’s. I feel I owe it to my quarry to be able to see them well enough to precisely place my POA, and even at 150 yards, I don’t feel as comfortable placing my POA with a 1-6x as I do a 3-9x or 4-16x.

Were it my rifle, it would have at LEAST a 3-9x on top, but more likely a 4-16x or ballpark like a 4.5-14x, 3-12x, etc.

I also personally prefer, with punkin’ chuckers, a scope I can either dial OR at least with a graduated reticle (especially an FFP) to allow me to accurately and repeatably hold over or dial to precisely place that POA on my quarry. I’ve made long shots holding over in plex reticles, and know I can, but I also know I can do myself a favor by acknowledging I WILL want to make those shots and subsequently packing the appropriate tools in my bag before heading for the task. Remember, “long range” happens pretty fast when you’re talking about 200-300 grain bullets only leaving the station around 2000fps. 250 yards from my 45-70 has as much drop as 475 in my 6 Creed... so I don’t let myself be unduly complacent when it comes to 200-300yrd shooting with these big, slow hammers. But getting to 200-300yrds isn’t unreasonable with these either.

I would probably go with a 1-4x20 simply because if I'm using that type of rifle/cartridge my shots are going to be inside of a hundred yards.... Actually there's a very good chance I would use a fixed 4X shotgun scope on that rifle.

If you may need to take a shot outside of that distance I would probably start with a decent 3-9x40 and go up from there as @Varminterror suggest.
The reason I suggest starting with a 3-9x40 is because in my experience that tends to be the most common power and size, and often offers the best value for the amount of money spent.

Fixed 4x is perfect for that rifle, but they aren’t so common anymore.

For a compact scope, I love the Leopold VX1 2-7x33, and have three on handy, and Handi, rifles. I believe they are discontinued but if you can find one, it’s perfect for your rifle. Otherwise, a compact, lightweight 3-9x40, but they start getting big and ruin the charm of your rifle.

This 44mag H&R has a 1X5 on it, but it's
never been moved off 4X
JMHO- I think many overthink rifle
optics in 2021. I didn't have to twist
anything or flip a switch or push a
button or consult a ballistics table
Raised the gun, acquired my target and
took the shot. That's the way I want it
to happen 20210126_202836.jpg

Some of us can make it happen farther away, so we use tools better suited for a more challenging job.

We can still point and click just as easily at short range targets as any scope ever has, we can just do more on top too.

Yeah, I don't disagree. I'm no expert, but when I'm using a scope on a rifle it's either on minimum or max power, but really if I just had a fixed 4x or 6x I don't think I'd be complaining about the lack of power adjustment.

That said, for shots under 100 yards, I'm in agreement with Loon about a 1-4x. If for whatever reason a shot comes up at 25 yards there's no point in anything more than 1x
