Looking for some good gas checked lead bullets for my 45-70. And before someone says cast your own I have looked into and would love to start but i cant find a good supply of lead. And from what everyone tell me its not worth it if you can not get cheap lead locally.

Ok, So i bought a 20" katahdin barrel for my TC pro hunter. I am wanting to find a good gas checked lead bullet to hunt with. I was just wanting to know where you guys were getting yours from. I have lots of jacketed bullets but for some reason am wanting to try something different.

Let me know what u hunt with and have had good luck with thanks.

I'd think the reason for getting a .45-70 would to be to not have to use gas checks.
You should be able to easily drive a plain base to 1600 minimum.

Those are some good looking bullets. How do they perform on deer?

I am looking for something with a really wide metplat. Too bad they dont sell smaller quanities to try and see if you like them.

Yeah ,that`s what I was thinkin , gas check 45-70

Oregon Trail True Shot bullets are good bullets but they cost A LOT!!! They cost as much or more than Hornady's premium jacketed bullets. Leadheads Bullets are also very well made but cost a lot less than True Shot bullets as are Beartooth Bullets. I'll add one more to the GC bullet list which are in the same class and have a very wide meplat, Cast Performance Bullets.

I also see no need for a GC bullet in the 45-70, especially when they cost more than jacketed bullets. I'm shooting a 405gr plain base 18 BHN bullet from Missouri Bullets and they are very accurate without leading the barrel. The price is a fraction of the GC bullets from Oregon Trails.

Now that I answered the OP's question maybe I can deviate a little and agree with the guys saying gas checks aren't necessarily a required item. Right now my best is a Laser Cast 350g pushed by A2400 to 1400 fps. I also use Rx7 to shove the same up to 1640. Either load is accurate and takes deer and 200lb. pigs with no problems so far.

Still, a 420-ish GC bullet pushed to max with H322 is something everyone should try out for themselves.

heh-heh

Source for Lead

I buy reclaimed shotgun pellets from the local trap club and use that for non-blackpowder loading. It casts a good hard bullet.
