So i just picked up an american derringer in 45-70.Usually these come in 45c/410 in one cylinder and 45-70 in another. I'm glad when i picked it up both cylinders are 45-70. I have loaded shotshells for my BFR in 45-70. Does anyone know what the ballistic difference is between 45-70 shotshells and 410 is? Or does someone have load data to load 45-70 close the the same ballistics as a 410?
Thanks

Bumping this thread. Interested in this as well. I have hears of people using .45-70 as shotshells before..on the Vortex Cartridge TableTable.
Also they did make "foraging" rounds issued to soldiers in the civil war. It was a wooden bullet I believe.

Anyone have any idea?
I don't see how they don't work well honestly.
The .45 Colt can be turned into a shotshell albeit with less shot than a .410 shotshell.

44 mag and 357/38, as well as 45 Colt could be had in years past from Thompson Center as HotShot loads. You could also get empty hotshot capsules. These hotshot rounds were no ordinary shotshell loading like you can find today from the likes of CCI. These hotshot capsules protrude a good inch from the casing. And they are FULL of shot. Now obviously these wont work in a repeating action, but will work in a break action.

You can occasionally still find the loaded ammo or capsules for sale. I bid on an auction recently with a good number of hotshot lots. Got 40 rounds for my 44 contender for about a buck a round.

I had good luck using 444 marlin shells to make "everlasting" 410 shells for my Contender. I also cut some 30-40 Krag shells off to cylinder length to make shot shells for my SBH. Had to file flats on the rims so they would chamber. Both worked well after the first firing which fire formed them.
