I personally carry an HK45C pistol everyday. I also have the Crimson Trace laser on it. I find I can conceal it under a colored t-shirt or button-up shirt just fine. Plus I like the .45ACP round more than the .40S&W I also own.
I've been carrying an alloy frame Sig 220 for years as a duty, teaching and CCW gun...you just get used to it.
If you're thinking of something a bit smaller, the most concealable, reliable and shootable small .45ACP is the Kahr PM45. It you don't mind going slightly larger, you can save some money with the Kahr CW45
I'm also in the market for a 45 to CCW ... there's a show coming to town in 2wks and I'm going to checkout ..... get ready here it comes ..... the Glock word ... the G30-SF ... their going for $575. OTD ... and I don't think I'd want to carry a G36 with only 6 rounds though. HK's out of my price range and most of the rest of the choices have too many thing-a-ma-jigs for my taste except MAYBE a S&W M&P without all the safety issues. Yeah you're going to call it a Block < to carry > not a Glock ... but then Glock has a wide variably of after market accessories too ... since I'd like to get a drop in barrel to shoot HC boolits for trips into the forest to ward off any furry footed borrowers that may need a persevering shot to move along it makes it a choice for ME to contend.
S&W M&PC is a great mid size carry 45ACP. So is the Glock 30 but the M&P just carries better for me at least. It's the size of a Glock 19/23 but a bit heavier.
My personal opinion lies with the gov't model. I carry a fullsize because the barrel length is a non issue for CCW, it's all in the grip size and shape. The Springfield XD has a similar size and shape and is very similar in thickness.
I've avoided other makes of pistol just based on personal preference, not because I think the Sigs and Kahrs are inferior, they just don't fit my hands as well as a 1911. I donlt often carry the XD for just the same reason. It feels just a little different.
I have changed my carry gun to a Colt New Agent with a Crimson Trace Laser and using a X-grip adapter on a full size mag as back up. 8+1 of 45 acp in a 23 oz. handgun. I carries great and is lighter that the M&P 45c it replaced ( I will be getting another one , though)
I carry a Kimber TLE II daily summer and winter, but own a Wiley Clapp Commander I would be comfortable with...good holsters and good belts make all steel guns disapear and feel lighter.
I find it as easy (if not easier) to carry and conceal a 5" 1911 as any of my Glocks. I'm looking into a G30SF and/or a Commander sized 1911 as my next purchase for CCW.
I have owned an HK .45C for several years and it is my preferred concealed carry choice. This is a very well made weapon, accurate, good safety features and not overly heavy. This particular model HK really surprised me in the RECOIL department - it is very moderate for .45. The grip and mag provide a perfect match for my hand size.
When going concealed one most decide if it is necessary to go to a smaller caliber to avoid excessive weight while maintaining concealed status. The HK .45C resolves those issues while maintaining fire power.
Glock, SIG, HK, S&W...even Ruger. They all make good guns in .45 ACP. If you're into 1911s (I'm not) there's even more to look at. Research the guns and get your hands on them to try them out. Asking for "the best" on an internet forum will only get you a ton of opinions based on personal favorites and personal dislikes.
