Loading 45 acp using Berrys 230 gr. copper plated bullets. I have the 49th Lyman , Lee manual and the Speer manual . Have been using 5.0 grs. of Bullseye . Cycles good and pretty accurate. According to some of these manual that is a light load for the 45. What do you think ?

If it's accurate and reliably cycles the gun I think it doesn't matter. Only way to know is to work the load up anyways and never exceed max published data.

I think that is one of the most used loads for the 45 acp......

Maybe time for a crony?

5.0gn of Bullseye is a very good load for .45acp 230gn hardball. Out of a 4 1/4" commander, I get around 800fps

My powder measure drops 5.1 / 5.2 consistently, so that's what I use all the time, with no problems of any kind. BTW, I also use Barry's Coated Bullets.

Like already said, who cares as long as the load cycles the slide and is accurate? Usually you don't want to go too light because of fears of sticking a bullet in the barrel. If your load is generating enough energy to cycle the slide it will not leave a bullet in the barrel. 5.0gr Bullseye? Generations of shooters can't be wrong. :)

Five grains of Bullseye under a 230 gr. bullet is the "Classic" 45 ACP load...

If it works well for you, go with it. Keep in mind that lighter loads can be perfectly fine with your recoil spring matched to your load. Lighter load, lighter spring.

With my 5" RIA 1911 that I use primarily of load-testing ...

I have found that 5.0gr of Bullseye under a 230gr FMJ bullet will produce a velocity over my CHRONY of ~815fps.

The same weight of Bullseye under a 230gr Plated bullet only runs at ~750fps.

FYI :)

BTW, that FMJ load is a OneRaggedHole load for me.

Chief99 I notice you are from Jacksonville, NC and was wondering if you know of any local places that sell powder that have some on the shelf? I am about an hour north of you and am in the need of a road trip to get away from work for a little while.

Five grains of Bullseye with a 230 FMJ was the original load used in the 1910 developmental cartridges, and from other web postings, was the standard US GI load in the 45 ACP. This load was a common hard ball load for Bullseye shooters.
