5" barrel / West Coast Plated 230gr. RN vs. Western Nevada 230gr LRN.. same design

Titegroup/WLP/Brass IMI Match/ COL 1.260/ Crimp .470 Lee Factory

As you will see, the data isn't perfect. I was rather rushed and could only get off 8 shots per. I think that the plated 4.1gr is questionable.

Titegroup: 4.0gr

Bullet Velocity S.D.
plated 728 14
lead 773 14

Titegroup: 4.1gr

plated 725 22
lead 778 14

Titegroup: 4.2gr

plated 738 16
lead 781 11

I'm looking for a load in lead that is around a 170K PF. It seems that I would need to go below minimums listed in my load books. The lowest I found was 3.9gr in the Laser-Cast book. Anyone load to lower levels without problems?

That's only a bit below a "normal" 230 gr load. I would think you could safely back it down a little. Your slowest lead load is already 177, so don't cut you margin for error back too much.

Also, try weighing both of the styles of bullets. Lead bullets in particular tend to vary from the advertized weight, and this matters as much as velocity in PF.

As suggested, I weighed twenty each of plated (233gr) and lead (231.1gr) bullets. I also downloaded to 3.7gr with the lead bullets and tested for reliability and accuracy. Both seemed to be good in my Valtro, but this IS BELOW the lowest published specs that I have seen. I haven't shot outside with this load, so haven't chron'd, but plan on shooting IDPA tomorrow with 3.7gr Titegroup and lead.
