Smith & Wesson 99 now comes in .45... I've shot the .40 and loved it.

I'd pretty much agree with being very, very careful about buying a 1911A1 with anything shorter than a commander length barrel. However, I have a 1991A1 Compact (ugly officers model) and put a Kings bushing/reverse plug set up on it, and while its still ugly, its as reliable as a 5 inch model. Word of caution-change the recoil spring every couple of thousand rounds if you are shooting full house ammo to keep it reliable.

Have you looked into an S&W CS45? An excellent gun, concealable and light-recoil. Definitely worth a look, IMO.

A full-size 1911 rides on my belt most of the time. The weight doesn't bother me, and it conceals well.
