45 auto rim in moon clips????

I just purchased one of the smith and wesson classic 22 thunder ranch revolvers in 45 acp. I've noticed buffalo bore makes some hotter 45 AUTO RIM loadings. I, unlike some shooters, love moon clips. Is it possible to use the AUTO RIM cartridges IN a moon clip?

Anyways it worked like that in my 625, acp clips ar no clips , but I think there`s speed loaders available though.

HKS speedloaders I think is the 25 if I am not mistaken. I have a 625-8 with the ils lock on it and being disabled,the hotloaded autorim works well for me. I do shoot bal for defense and target and,semi200 grain semiwadcutters also for defense. rich642z Thats why I shoot and carry revolvers now.

^^ This. The sole function of the moon clips is ejection. That they are essentially a $1 speed loader is a happy coincidence...

No, in fact, the whole idea of the Auto Rim is to eliminate the moon clip.

HKS 25M Speed-Loader is for the .45 Auto Rim cartridge.

Whole point of the auto-rim cartridge is to eliminate the need for moonclips. If you want to use moonclips, then just use the less expensive and easier to find .45 ACP.
HKS does make speedloaders for the AR cartridges. Never saw the point though.

Depending on what you use the gun for, AR cartridges have some advantages.

For a hunter or woods bum, who more often then not might get one or two shots at something, you can reload one or two loose rounds of AR without the hassel of prying them out of a moon clip or carrying a 1/3 empty moon clip around the rest of the day.

The other is for reloading heavy bullet hunting loads that you don't want to find thier way into a 1911.

The cartridge would have better been called the .45 Auto Rimmed cartridge. It is simply a .45 auto cartridge with a revolver-type rim added so that one can use the gun as they would "normal" revolvers. As such, the ejector star on the revolver will work the same as on any other revolver to eject those rimmed .45 auto rounds.

Due to the base of the AR cartridges having a thick rim and a little thicker bottom area, a slightly hotter load can be worked up for the AR cartridge.

I've got a few hundred rounds of AR ammo but usually just use .45 Auto cartridges in mine. At the range plinking, I don't even use moon clips with 'em . . . though I surely do for self defense and match play.

Here's a photo montage I made up to show you the differences. Notice the ejector star does NOT pull out the .45 Auto rounds but does pull out the rimmed .45 rounds.

AFAIK, it has not been done, but since cylinders are now being cut and clips made for standard rimmed cartridges, I see no reason the S&W .45 revolver could not be cut the same way and .45 AR used with clips. It should not interfere with use of the .45 ACP with its own clips since that round would still be supported on the case mouth.

The people to ask would be Cylinder and Slide; they do that kind of work.
